Underwater treasure of four rivers
Jan 2020
An excellent idea in an original way of presenting biodiversity of city on four rivers. The education and visual experience of underwater fauna is an interesting experience for both children and adults. Located in a building that is perfectly architecturally fitting to the environment, the Karlovac Aquarium is an unavoidable point of visiting the city. Great souvenir shop with local produce, fine coffee in the cafe, friendly hosts. Quiet and peaceful place for a morning walk and escape from the noise of everyday life.

Relaxing and nice
Feb 2020 • Couples
Very nice and relaxing. Something cool to see for yourself. I am very glad that my beautiful country has something to offer like this , something unrelated to the sea, something that shows the richness of Croatian rivers and lakes. Thumbs up Karlovac!

An amazing experience!

Being an nature lovers, we had great time visiting Aquatika!
Beautiful setting on shores of river Korana, its new modern design blends nicely in the enviroment ...
All types of of freshwater fish can be seen in pools, and some are in impressive size!
But also relaxing caffe bar area or just walk to the dam are quite nice.
A little bit dark in some areas(tunnel), and as well lack of the other wildlife from the water )like frogs, snakes etc) are areas which could be improved...

Thank you very much for your review. We are pleased to hear that you had a great time visiting our freshwater aquarium. The tunnel is made dark to help experience the underwater world of a cave. The exhibition is made so every visitor can experience the typical karst rivers, from its source to estuary, including the dark cave life of endemic fish species. Regarding other species like frogs and snakes, we would very much like to have them, but need to invest in proper exhibition of such species and educated workforce. And we can do so just after 5 years as we are monitored as a European project for this period of time. Hope you will visit us again soon as every visit is different due to our constant striving to expand and give additional content to visitors.

Exciting gem in the middle of nowhere
Aug 2019
This is a unique experience not to miss. Freshwater aquaria are rare and this is a huge one. Easy access, good parking for free. Staff speaks English, the entry fee is reasonable. The presented species are not sufficiently detailed, more information is provided on the ecological aspects and the freshwater habitat in general. Considering that many people go there to see the "big fish" it would make sense to provide extensive descriptions. Unfortunately that is completely missing. As for the animals: an almost complete presentation of the species of the area is provided. Some are under represented though. E.g. there are only a couple of bream-sized catfish which do not do justice to these mighty predators.

Thank you very much for your review. We are pleased to hear that you had a good time visiting our freshwater aquarium. But to make a full experience of the freshwater world, we recommend that you take a guided tour of the aquarium, in which you can hear and learn a lot about the mysterious world of our rivers and lakes. During the summer (July and August) we have free guided tours every day at 11 am. It takes 45 minutes in which our guides explaine all the interesting facts about the river and all fish species. Besides this, we have a free audio guide for smartphones, which you can conncet to via our wi-fi. Hope you will visit us again soon.

Good - could be better - a lot better

I visited today and used the wifi guide on my phone - great idea!

I would say the aquarium doesn’t nearly reach its full potential. It has many impressively large tanks of fish but to be honest most fish (not all) look quite similar and the signs are hard to read in the dark so the uninformed viewer has no idea what they are looking at. Also it’s almost entirely fish. You might think that is to be expected in an aquarium, but I would also expect more in the way of plants, molluscs, reptiles, crustaceans and other arthropods (which are my favourite). Are the tank environments realistic recreations of a river? I don't know, but they don't look like the rivers that I saw in Karlovac.

An improved information system is needed. Guides that explain how "water is eternal life" etc may be poetic but they are not appropriate for a scientific establishment. The notes are also hard to relate to the exhibit. For example, there is information about the travertine barrier. But nowhere could I see anything that matched the description.

People do want to know what they are looking at, but you must assume that the viewer knows nothing about the subject. In the case of the travertine, you might have a piece of red string leading from the explanatory word to the thing being explained. Or, you could perhaps develop an augmented reality app to put on a phone.

The building etc is lovely and imaginative. The display is less so. This is the wrong way round.

Thank you very much for your review. We appreciate it very much, especially your proposals to improve the visitor's experience. We are a European project, that is co-financed by the European Union from the European Regional Development Fund and therefore can not change the exhibition while the project has been monitored (for 5 years). But we will strive to do our best to maximize our quality of service. We hope you will visit us again on the next occasion.

something new in Karlovac
Apr 2019 • Family
I have to say.. we are with two small kids, I'm trying to take them somewhere, just to make some fun together maybe to see something but more than less to make them tired .. this is 30min walking max, only fresh water fishes, terrace outside when they had them icecream. Nothing super impressive but nice to know what is swimming under your body in the European lakes and rivers hihi

Casual sunday outside

Nice walk although a little bit crowded during the weekend. Unique museum because usually you will see fishes from the and not from freshwater. When finished, there is a nice walk around the river and park to fullfill the day. In the museum you have guides for every explanation you can think about when there are no crowds.

My visit to Aquarium was a bit ad hoc, but pleasant experience.
I was the only visitor and had the whole place for myself.
There was an option of getting information about fishes through WiFi, but I was lucky to meet a young lady who was preparing herself to guide future tours. We had really interesting conversation as she was able to explain things to me. I also very much liked her curiosity and apparent willingness to learn as much as possible about exhibits.
Taking photographs is allowed.
Also, there is a small gift shop at the exit area.
