There are two forts above Hvar. The Spanish fort is the lower one (which you can go in) and the Napolean / French fort (this one) is the higher one (which you cannot go in). If you take the footpath through the woods, it takes about 45 mins or so to reach the top, very nice walk. If you go round by road, it would be longer. Where the road forks, take the right fork (signed with viewpoint and walking trails and a cycle route). After the last houses, there is a "road narrows" roadsign, and then an advert for something like "rural tourist, mostly home cooked food". Almost immediately after that, there's a brown sign pointing up into the woods, labeled "Napoleon Fort" and "Brusje" (see picture). This is the start of the footpath. The path is marked at regular intervals with red and white paint marks (also see picture). Just before the top, it comes out on the road which you follow up to the old fort (now owned by the observatory) with benches for admiring the views.

Nice place to walk to -- you'll get your steps in, but it's worth the walk to see the harbor view. There were taxi's at the top if you prefer to take one but walk up there because you'll find several cute little shops.

My sister and I went here early mornings to beat the heat. It's a nice workout after a heavy brekkie. The views are truly breathtaking and worth the effort in my opinion.

The walk up was well worth the effort. The views are the best in Hvar, overlooking the harbour. The fort itself dates from 13th century. The history is more impressive than the fort itself, but nonetheless one of the “must dos” whilst in Hvar.

Worth the twenty minute hike up and back to see the amazing views! The fort’s history is pretty cool and worth a stop off. There is an amazing cactus garden on the path too.

Fortunate to be brought up here by Zoranna of Kuzma Hvar Taxi & Transfer Tours. The most spectacular view and a great deal of information on the history given to us by our wonderful guide.

I've noticed that many reviews published under the name of Napolean Fortress actually belong to the Hvar Fortress. Please note, Hvar Fortress can be easily hiked from the town of Hvar, but Napolean Fortress is farther ahead and a car can easily reach up to it.
The views from here are magical & the solitude is worth cherishing as you won't find many tourists here.
Take your snack pack & a mat to sit on (there's also a bench there). Enjoy the breeze, maybe play some music and the hours fly by....

Avoid mid-day when the sun is at it's hottest for the climb up to the fort. It is 50kr to get in and although not a lot to see inside, the views are spectacular and the history makes interesting reading.

Fantastic views of township & surrounds. There is 182 steps so it is bit of a workout. Nice surprise to a find a bar in the castle. A drink with a view.
