Went on a rainy morning without high expectations not being a follower of art as a main interest. Became totally fascinated about this artist’s work including how he prepared with sketches some of his finest works. The house is full of interesting artifacts of the nineteenth century including his paintings. Not being a avid art follower he seemed to embrace many styles of painting. Very reasonable priced at three euros per person with very helpful staff. Went in not expecting much, left having been captivated by this man’s work and history.

Connoisseurs of art, especially painting, know how lucky they are to come to the Bukovac house. The great painter Vlaho Bukovac left behind masterpieces of painting that are presented in the museum. You can see the painter's most important phases through Paris, Zagreb, Cavtat and finally Prague in one place. In the other rooms of the house, a selection from the collection of furniture and personal items, as well as part of the archive, is placed. The walls of his birth house were painted by the painter himself, and these paintings were discovered during the renovation about 20 years ago.

Such a good place to visit and we enjoyed hearing about the back story of the artist and his family from the museum staff. Lots of beautiful paintings, murals and artefacts. Some restoration of rooms still being carried out. Loved that the museum was actually the residence of Bukovac.

This was a wonderful find up a side street off the main harbour front in Cavtat. Bukovac's work is dotted around Croatia and I first became aware of him in the Dubrovnik Gallery of Modern Art - a wonderful portrait of an old lady, amongst other works.
His family home is simple and charming but the 'wow' room is his studio, full of his paintings, art materials and reference books. I loved seeing his photo albums with grids marked on various photos which he must have used to 'scale up' his portraits onto canvas. This was a real gem in gorgeous Cavtat. Well worth a visit even if you're not into art. By the way, look out for the slightly macabre but beautifully painted family portrait.

we walked through old Cavtat when we came across this house. This used to be the place where the famous painter worked. He has decorated all walls in a unique style and there were many other paintings by his hand to see. It is a small museum (actually a large house used as a museum) but it was worth the visit.

Located up on of the many terraced streets leading from the harbour, the house stands in a small courtyard area. You are met as you enter and provided with an overview of the man and his life as an international painter of the late 19th/early 20th century. You are then left to roam the rooms of the house which he occupied as a child (restored to much of the original house) at your leisure. It is incredible that you can view a great selection of his works and influences at such close quarters, a great experience.

Bukovac House is the childhood home of Vlaho Bukovac (1855-1922) and is open from Tuesday to Sunday varied hours. Now a museum located in the historic heart of Cavtat on a street named after the painter so easy to locate. Typical Cavtat architecture in stone on two floors. The museums rich permanent collection contains pieces from Vlaho's entire work.Includes his work whilst in Cavtat, Paris, Zagreb, & Prague and includes drawings, funiture and other personal belongings that testfy to his extraordinary life as an artist. Well laid out in lovely setting and includes courtyard & garden. Several rooms are decorated with murals from his early childhood years.

Bukovav's paintings are presented in what was once his family home: it is an intimate viewing, with some interesting (and a few disturbing) paintings. The guide was very helpful, giving a short and unimposing introduction on the artist before we viewed the house, and his English was impeccable.
Well worth a visit!

The Bukovac house in Cavtat is a must for anyone with even a passing interest in art. It is also quite a poignant homage to the life, work and family relationships of Cavtat's greatest painter.
The museum is located up a few steps, just beyond the cafes and restaurants along the seafront in Cavtat (just before the little church)and is signposted.
The walls are covered with charming murals, only recently discovered during restoration and there is a real sense of this being a real home, being as it is filled with many of his personal effects, tools of his art and many of the props used in his paintings. Some of the work is of the highest calibre and there is one painting of a young girl,so bewitching as to stay in the memory long after our visit.
The paintings of his family, especially his children are extraordinary and the portraits of his father are quite poignant especially the very last one.
The only downside is the little shop in the ticket office, which does not have much by way of reproductions to buy. This was a great shame and I only wished I had taken my camera out during the visit!
Bukovac was an internationally successful artist and any visit to Cavtat merits a visit to this charming house.

It was very interesting to visit this old house and to see a bit of culture after all the sun and sea during July in Cavtat. This is the summer dwelling of a famous Croatian artist and the top floor is a gallery of his paintings. He was very good at traditional portraits but later in life he was influenced by the Impressionists etc in Paris. I preferred his earlier stuff.

IS there a Chinese restaurant in cavtat please help
Written August 25, 2016
Hi Albert - there are a couple of restaurants serving Asian food as part of their menu, Kamen Mali and Konoba Toranj, but we didn't see any Chinese restaurants. Dubrovnik might be a better option - 30 mins on bus from Cavtat.

Hi,
Will someone give me some nearby landmarks to this museum. Google maps isn't able to locate it. We will either take the bus or boat from Dubrovnik.
Thank you so much!
Yvonne

Same advice as previous person. The street is between the rows of shops to the left side of the town street from the harbour. If you see the main town square (probably with stalls on it) then go to the righ of this and you will see the street. Not totally easy to find but worth the effort.
