Who puts the location for these museums into trip advisor? Yet again another confused tourist who got whisked around on a day tour and doesn't realize the museum is in a completely different ancient town Shuhe to the north of Lijiang. Trip advisor is a good resource for sights not in the guidebook. Unfortunately it's plagued by false locations by confused tourists who get led around and don't realize where they actually went.

A very old and historical building. Unfortunately rather run down but gives an idea of a rich persons home of that time. The exhibits not well set up and all the explanations are in Chinese. Still gives an understanding of the tea road. If you are over 70 it is free and between 65 and 70 half price (even foreigners) so bring your passport

This site is tucked away and it is an absolute wealth of historic information about the Tea Horse Road as well as local culture. It suffers a little bit from a lack of English captions but I really enjoyed walking through the old buildings and looking at the interesting collection of ephemera. The rooms are well grouped by interest. If you have the time and interest to learn more about local culture, I would recommend spending an hour or two in the musuem.

Before you get too caught up shopping in this old town, this museum will provide you with a good perspective of the history here. The museum is a little hard to find from the entrance an is a good 20 min walk away. In the museum you can find old photographs and old equipment and tools used. Too bad they don't allow photography in the museum.

I'm conflicted on the rating.
The museum is small with (mostly) Chinese-only explanations, rather run-down, and in an obscure location.
Having said that, it presents an important part of the region's history -- one I was unaware of until visiting Lijiang. Having grown up riding, I have an affection for horses, so probably enjoyed the museum more than non-riders. Tea, not so much, although the history of the trade routes is interesting, especially as it relates to WWII.
The low rating is strictly from an English-speaking perspective. Were I fluent in written Chinese (I know, perhaps, five spoken words), I'd give it three stars.

This is a little museum set in deceptively large grounds which are very pretty. It's worth an hour or so if you're strolling by with nothing to do, but I wouldn't make a detour.

This was disappointing for us since we wanted a thorough introduction to the Tea Horse Road. Only a few exhibits had any English captions.
