Its a nice park and in these covid times not busy. You are no longer allowed to climb the small elephant hill. Getting into the park is a hassle - you are for sure not welcomed by the people on the gate. You need a 48hr pcr test

However in the tumult i was never asked to pay an entrance fee - maybe its now waived

The park is not that big and it was a hassle to enter considering how much time we spent there. The health code and registration took a fair amount of time. The area around the penny pavilion is nice and there is lots of shaded areas to sit.

It is near the old town and took about 20 minutes to walk here from there.

This is a wonderful location for great photos and for the scenery. It is a very peaceful place and is great in the morning. If you are willing to get there earlier than the gatekeeper, you can enter with no charge and I highly advise it!

First, I confirm that you don't need to pay any fee to enter inside (no entrance fee and no need to pay the 80 Rmb of Lijiang old city). You can get into freely just by going through the Exit gate...

The pool is still empty but the view on the dragon snow mountain is nice.

We wanted to climb the mountain inside the park in order to have a better view, but people advice us to don't go there. If you want to climb the mountain you must pass by a kind of "check point" and sign your name. People told us that it was not safe to go there because some local people are hiding there to assault you and steal your money or other belongings.

To sum up:
It is nice to go there if you can enter for free.
Don't try to climb the mountain if you are less than 4 peoples (for safety reasons).

A tip, do not pay the 80 Yuan conservation fee if you don't want to. I don't believe it's worth it, and despite it is advertised that it is of use in different places, I couldn't find one.

You can simply pass the entry inside the park and walk thru the Mao statue square towards outside the town. Once you reach a touristic bus parking spot (You will easily see it by the number of tourists) you just keep walking by the pond next to the fence until you reach a sort of a temple. Then go in and you will see a ticket office. Keep walking by the lake towards a wooden bridge et voila, there is an entrance to the outer part of this park. It's nothing special, and the view is spoiled by the many construction going on there, but you just saved enough Yuan for 4 beers.

Our family of four (2 adults, 2 children ages 7 and 10) enjoyed a pleasant morning at Black Dragon Pool Park. The lake is very beautiful, especially with the 5-Arch Bridge, the Deyue Pavilion on a small island in the middle, and the clear view of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in the background. There are a number of temples to visit. The path around the lake area is long, and you can wander and watch some of the locals playing mahjong at outdoor tables. We arrived around 11 a.m., and the setting was very peaceful. The children enjoyed being able to explore, climb on rocks, find large leaves to float on the water, count fish in the lake, and lead us across the bridges.

The park is located a short walk (about 10 minutes) north of the main entrance to Old Town Lijiang. Along the way, we saw local women washing their clothes and dishes in the river. The entrance fee was covered under our Old Town tickets, which we purchased from our courtyard hotel in the Old Town area (around $12 for adults). The ticket also covers the entrance to Old Lion Hill Park, Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Park, and other places.

We had a relaxing time here and would definitely recommend a visit.

Spectacular view, need pay entrance fee rmb50 which is valid for 30days. Can have a small hike at elephat hill which is easy to locate. We waited for sunset to take a great photo of the mountain and pool.

I travelled to Black Dragon Pool with my husband in the winter, paying 80RMB per person which is actually a maintenance fee for Lijiang Old Town, thus entitling holders to entry in the park and other attractions around Lijiang.
The scenery is gorgeous, deep blue, babbling brooks connecting to the Dragon pool, surrounded by plenty of park benches for a quiet spell, the Freedom Forest, which is actually a building encasing artwork for sale and the DongBa Research Institute, which includes the Naxi minority peoples' artefacts and scrolls (closed at the time of our arrival).
We are keen hikers and were looking forward to climbing Elephant Hill (Xiang Shan), unfortunately, access is only for locals (my husband is Chinese, but not from Yunnan Province) or parties of four. While the gate keeper was quite officious, I was later told there has been several robberies on Elephant Hill, so it makes sense they are covering themselves by limiting access.
I reccomend CangShan mountain in Dali, 2 hours by train or 4 hours by bus, if you are a keen hiker and in Yunnan.

I have been to many lovely public parks in China, but the Black Dragon Pool park stands out. It is a short walk from Lijiang's Old Town along an attractive canal. The park was beautiful with flowering trees and a lovely lake. There was a small group of ancient orchestra musicians playing when we visited. There is a nice temple and the museum of Dongba Culture very close to the park, and both were worth seeing. I could have stayed here all day just enjoying the peace and tranquility, but the rest of Yunnan beckoned! It was lovely.

Must visit place within 20 minutes walk from the old town. Make sure to go on a clear day otherwise you won't see the mountain or the reflections on the lake.
