A museum showcasing the culture of the Naxi. The Naxi are a Chinese minority in the Lijiang region. The Naxi had their own customs and cultures that were quite different from the Han.
Their culture is called dongba and they have their own characters called dongba characters. The graphic-based characters are similar to the Egyptian characters, although they are not the same.
Pretty attractive for culture and history fans.

The only thing that was really worthwhile during my whole stay in Lijiang - but th e gift shop items are horribly overpriced.

I found the museum of the history of the Naxi people quite interesting with English explanations of the animist Dongba religion. An explanation was made of the efforts to preserve the pictographic language, customs, and writings. Displays showed lodgings, rituals, customs, and paper making for use by the priests.

Located at the entrance of Black Dragon Pool Park, this museum is worth a visit if you are in the area. Displays here include Naxi dress, Dongba script, historical relics and cultural items. The Dongba hieroglyphic script is taught to both students and visitors here. Interesting visit.

At the end of Blackdragon pool and not particularly well signposted. That said, the place contains some interesting exhibits, good photos , and best of all comprehensive descriptions, in English of Naxi culture, religion and daily life, Don't make a special trip but treat it as part of a pleasant stroll round the pools and temples. Exit via the North Gate and go back towards the old town.Call in at Speakeasy for coffee on the way, the only blue building. The shop has some interesting items, but is overpriced, as is Lijiang. Go to Shuher to shop.

Firstly, the museum is well laid out and has some very interesting historical artifacts. We got a guided tour from one of the staff in English who carefully walked us through several of the stories etched into the wall carving pictorials which are a protected heritage site, as well as all the other key exhibits. Unlike other places where an english speaking guide takes you around for free, there was no sales pressure on anything, and we were left completely alone to browse the gift shop at our own leisure at the end. Highly recommend this to anyone in Lijiang.

I think the place we visited is new because nothing like the photos here. A great insight into the local Lijiang culture and religion . The explanation of the naxi scrip was interesting too and made me realise how simple signs can get a message across

The Naxi people form the majority of the ethnic tribes in Lijiang and their history and culture are documented in this small museum. We were amazed at the use of pictographs by the Naxi people, very similar to Egyptian hieroglyphs and still in common usage by shops and restaurants as decorative symbols. There is also a colourful display of the various costumes worn by Naxi priests (Dongba) and the common people. The displays have English explanations and we left educated!

If like me, this is the first time you've heard of the Naxi people, then this museum is worth a visit. It's not very big in size or in number of artifacts, but it gives you a sense of this ancient culture, people and their living hieroglyphic script and you even get to see a real life Shaman.
