Great place to explore and get lost in, akin to Venice in terms of narrow streets and car-free environment. Some things to definitely enjoy -
1. Canals - these run throughout the town, go through the back streets (follow the canal path along Qiyi Street) to see more and avoid the crowds. You may bump into locals there whom are very friendly.
2. Roofscape - very interesting and best viewed from Hizi Mount / Lion Hill (the hill to the west of the town with the temple at the top).
3. Courtyards - most houses / inns in the old town have internal courtyards which you can peek into and maybe enter (but ask first if you're not sure).
The northern part of town around Yuhe Square can be mobbed in the evenings and is very touristy, complete with McD's, KFC, Pizza Hut et all, so best avoid if you're not into these things.
Would be good if the Lijiang authorities clamp down on the bars and clubs pumping loud music.

Li Jiang is good for the camera and although it can feel a bit like Disneyland at times, it's pretty authentic. Note that very little of the old town is original since it was all mostly destroyed in the 1996 Earthquake, but kudos to the Yunnan provincial government for preserving this and rebuilding it so accurately and well controlled, nothing tacky or chaotic, and evidently they keep adding to it with new 'quarters' comprising of hotels that blend in so well you hardly notice them, with strict building codes and attention to detail. Realise it's very popular with wealthy Chinese tourists who make up 95% of the the tourists, so gets crowded and noisy, and by night one area has some lively pubs that are at odds with the old town, but blend in. Lots of souvenir shops but tasteful.
On the negative side, few speak any English, they don't need to since there are so many Chinese tourists, it's easy to get lost (all part of the adventure) among the lanes, and bits can be a bit of a rip off.
Weather was great, worth going up the hill to Emperor Mu's pagoda, and the food is great, provided you enlist a local to order for you.

1. Climb Yulong mountain (where the god lives)
1) Getting to the highest altitude in your life
It is exciting to take the cable car to the altitude of 4506 km above the see level, and climb to the 4636 km which maybe the highest altitude I can get in my life.
2) Never miss the show “Lijiang, Impression”
You can touch the warmth and the passion of the Naxi people through that wonderful show, 800 local people involved in the show, what attracts me most is that at the end of the show, the leading actor said “we are not actors, we are not stars, we are just local farmers, we act using our heart, would you like it, would you come back again next year”, most of audience stand up and say yes, and the actor continues saying “we will be right here, waiting for you”, I saw many people cry at that moment.
3) Other beautiful scenes
In the afternoon we went down the mountain using shuttle bus, and also some places like Yak plain and blue moon valley worth a shot.
2. The Lijiang ancient town
The ancient town itself also a fabulous place, you don’t need to do anything, just find a chair to sit, and keep your mind blank, you will never feel life is that beautiful
3. tea-horse ancient pathway (茶马古道)
You can rent a horse to re-experience the pathway where the ancient people deliver tea to Tibet using horse, and eat some baked fish at “Lashi sea”.
4. Stay in hostel(客栈)
In Lijiang, we choose hostel(客栈) to stay instead of hotel, not only because it is more local, but also you gather with people in the yard talking; in that relaxed environment, you will easily make friends and share everything in your heart.
5. Food recommendation
La paigu, salmon fish, Sanyao chicken…

Many of the reviews below refer to the old town of Lijiang itself, not the world heritage park.
Today I walked to the location of the world heritage park (a little north of the old town) and found it is gone and houses are been built on it.
Do not confuse the old town with the heritage park.

I have been to Lijiang more than 4 times in total, and had recently decided to move there to live. However, I'd like to use this chance to raise the attention for travelers and esp. the UNESCO World Heritage regarding some of the problems that I've observed over the years. One of the biggest problems is the local government's lack of support for small eco tourism operators. The current policy largely encourages mass tourism through state-owned travel operators, with lack of incentives for small eco-friendly operators. Many famous sites have become "tourist traps" because of this. Also, travelers are all required to pay an "Old Town Protection Fee" upon check in at most hotels, despite that some travelers might not even step foot in the old town. This protection fee costs CNY 80, which is a steep sum for the average Chinese. We all know that UNESCO already provides funding to all of it's sites for maintainance and protection, so why does Lijiang's local government still charge this fee on top of what had been given? I heard that UNESCO had consented for Lijiang's government to charge this fee for 2 years, and the 2 year period had already expired and it is technically illegal for the government to charge this fee under it's current terms with UNESCO. Also, the government does not reveal to the public how it has used the proceeds. Short term visitors maybe impressed by the glistening water running along the streams inside the old city of Lijiang, but those who have spent an extended period in the area would know that garbage piles up just outside of Shuhe, and it there is not a single road lamp in place for the residents of Shuhe and Baisha. Also, Shuhe Old Town, which is also a part of the "Lijiang Cultural heritage park" had sold it's operation rights off to a local private developer. The private developer is charging an entry fee of CNY 50 on top of the Old Town Protection fee. All of this is really unreasonable, and hope that UNESCO would take a closer look during it's next inspection tour of Lijiang. I can't help to feel that sometimes UNESCO does more damage by putting a site under it's heritage list.

Dec 2011
Visited Lijiang from 11 Dec - 16 Dec 2011.
For the adults it was an interesting experience to see different architecture. The kids however did not enjoy much of the scenery (mountains) except the horse ride and wetland at Lashihai.
We experienced very cold weather. Temperature dropped to -2deg. If you are visiting during winter period, do not stay in any hotel in the Old town. The hotels here are not allowed to install heaters. We stayed in one of the hotels and was a bad experience... the kids just did not like showering as the entire room was like an ice box.
Black dragon pool - nothing much to see really. However on a clear day might be able to catch a glimpse of the Jade Mountain. Free entrance if you have paid for the Old Town Protection fee (RMB 80/person, kids below 1.2m free)
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain - expensive
*Entrance alone to the park itself cost RMB105/adult and RMB50/child
*Catch the Lijiang Impressions - we paid RMB190/person. Have a better view from the central session. It is very crowded and adults do not give way to children. While making the way out of the show, could practically stand and be pushed along the way. Make sure you keep your child in sight and close to you.
After the show, we went on to the Blue-Moon Valley. It is here where we saw Yaks. Poor chaps standing in the cold water. It was an opportunity for the kids to stroke the fur of the yak and have a photo shot. The pool is really Blue in colour. Quite a sight.
To get to this place, got to take a bus (RMB20/p). Thereafter a tram (RMB40/p) which dropped us at 3 different spots for photo taking.
Tiger Leaping Gorge
We hired a taxi for the day (RMB400) from 9am to 6pm. Make sure you have someone to recommend a good driver. The road to the Gorge took about 2.5hrs one way from old town. Initial part of the road is windy with numerous accidents that happened along the way. Some parts of the road are not paved was really bumpy. Make sure you clear your bladder before you embark on the journey.
Entrance fee to the gorge is pretty reasonable at RMB50/p (no charge for children)
Long walk to the gorge. Took about 45min to 1 hr to walk to the gorge. Spectacular sight.
Horse-riding and boat ride at Lashihai.
Even the adults enjoy the horse ride. We took the 2.5 hrs option, which brought us uphill. Experience how the tea merchants ride the trail to Tibet, India etc.
Thereafter proceed to a boat ride at the wetlands for bird watching. Very serene place.
The stated price was RMB380/person. Our driver negotiated RMB300/person.
If you go during winter, ensure you have thermal wear, lip balm, sunglass, sunblock.

I used the address here on trip advisor to put a pin-point on my phone map. I used the Chinese Address here on trip advisor to show my driver. I showed the driver the address and he said he knew where it was, but that I should go to Heilong (Black Dragon) Park instead and then walk over to the World Heritage Park and then walk back to Heilong where he would collect me.
So I did that. The pointer on my map, shows the reservoir. I sat there and enjoyed my lunch and then wondered round what I would call a pocket park, just down from the reservoir. I walked back to Heilong (about 30 mins) where there is much more to do.
A few days later I was looking on booking.com and their map showed the World Heritage Park as being what my map has as "Si jian yi chan" Park. This is located about 30 mins walk North of the reservoir and about an hour's walk from Heilong Park.
So the next day... I ask my hotel to get me a ride to this park, the world heritage park and they tell its closed down! To which my response was, it's a park, it doesn't have walls, and they told me it is fenced off and the gate is closed or something.
If this is still a place, can someone sort it out. This was no. 1 on my list of stuff to do and I don't know if I missed out or not. :(

Over 100 yuan during the day; apparently free after sundown, but they don't tell you that at the ticket counter.

This is a beautiful park, full of heritage and culture. The Naxi traditional buildings, the narrow pedestrian cobbled streets, stone bridges and small streams can be found thoughout the park. There are many photo opportunities. The city keeps the place very clean, even the public washroom was very clean, well signed and beautiful flowers are displayed along the road. You won’t lack for restaurants and shops. Even McDonald's has a tiny shop there, only selling ice cream. We went there in early morning, most of the shops were not open yet. Somehow I managed to spend money on Lijiang's famous cookies made of fresh flowers.

What is the cost for the buffet breakfast when not included in room price?
Written April 8, 2015
Sorry - I traveled with a private guide and didn't use hotels with buffets or breakfast. Our guide sent us to small local restaurants for breakfast that generally were about 5 yuan for noodle soup and tea.
