We were hesitant going for the show as heard from some locals there is a better show in town. So that morning we hired a driver from the ancient city to drive us to Yulong Snow Mountain and a few other locations. We completed the Yulong circuit early and had time to spare. Our driver told us as a local he could get us discounted tickets to the show if we are keen and we thought why not as there was lots of time to spare. The stage was huge with the Yulong Snow Mountain as a backdrop and a very good sound system. We were seated on the first row and caught most of the action. But after the show we walked up the rows of seats and wished we had sat up in the last row and middle as the backdrop was more spectacular higher up. The Lijiang Impression really gave us a good idea of what the local scene was like long ago and the many colorful costumes signifies the different ethnic groups. But the sense of Mongolian influence is strong. The weather was kind that afternoon and we got through the hour long show taking home fond memories and photos.

My tips if you intend to watch the show:

1. It is best to check the show times. According to English website show times: 9am, 11am, 2pm (peak season); 11am, 2pm (off season). This is incorrect for off peak season. I visited in end Sep, it is considered off peak and there was ONLY 1 show at 1:30pm. Hence best to check with hotel or travel agency.

2. Get the ticket early, especially during peak season.

3. If your travel is flexible, best to check the weather forecast and come on a clear day. You can then enjoy the show with the amazing backdrop of the mountain ranges.

4. The show ticketing office and entrance is just across the road to the main ticketing building to Glacier Peak. This is the place when you arrive at Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

5. Get the normal seat which costs a hefty 280RMB. No need to pay for VIP seat (didn’t bother to ask).

6. Entrance will open 30 mins before show time. Suggest to be there early to queue and get better seats. Fyi, non peak season also attracts 500 visitors (my estimate) for the show.

7. Seat somewhere in the lower middle section, slightly to the right. Reason is there is only 1 large screen located on right side of amphitheatre. Also the right side has a lower stage section for performers, no such stage on the left side.

8. Look out for the smaller screen on the left side. Occasionally, it gives a short explanation of the performance in Chinese, with English translation.

9. As it is open spaced arena, it is subject to weather. Suggest to bring a sunhat or sunscreen for sunny weather. No umbrella allowed.

10. Bring a selfie stick to take better photos. As such, you can raise it to capture pictures only of the performers and not the audience’s heads.

11. If you first visit the Glacier Peak and return for the show, ensure you alight at carpark 3 and not carpark 1 & 2. Bus from Glacier Peak will first stop at carpark 1 & 2, then proceed to carpark 3. I made this mistake and ended up walking 10 mins more.

12. Seat back and enjoy the visually impressive show, lasting 65 mins.

Director Yimou Zhang designs series of live-action performance. Lijiang Impressions Show is one of them. It is outdoor performance and all actors are local people (minority people). Their enthusiasm and performance could catch your eye easily. If you miss it, you could miss to feel and know local calture part. The show experience and snow mountain tour need combined and mixed together. That is one integrated tour day of Yulong Snow Mountain (natural and cultural).

Lijiang Impressive Show ticket is CNY280 person at the show ticket box. Online booking is CNY228 person. Two sessions of the show a day at 11:10 and 13:30.

Suggestion: join a local day tour. It is the best and economic way. Day tour package is CNY550 person including local transportation, entry fee, electromobile(to cable car station), return cable car tickets, impression lijiang show.

- car rental to Yulong Snow Mountain from Lijiang old town: CNY200/day/car
- snow mountain entry fee: CNY130/person
- electromobile & cable car: CNY200/person
- impression lijiang show ticket: CNY280/person (or CNY228 online booking)

Tips:
1. oxygen bottle CNY68 for small one. It is optional one in case you are anoxia on snow mountain. In fact you don't need it if you are health and strong.
2. Please wear enough warm overcoat and take some warm drink.

It's a waste of time. There were 24 of us went for the show and majority fell asleep.

You won't understand what they trying to convey and performers lack of coordination.

Most of the time just seeing them running about and shouting.

Not worth the time. Mind you, it was above 4,000 meters and you imagine sitting under the strong UV for an hour.

Now, maybe I shouldn't be reviewing the show as we actually didn't go to the show, instead (thankfully) our hotel allowed us to return our tickets once we realize the true cost as you have to pay to get into the park to see the show. The following is the estimated cost breakdown provided to us when I went to pick up our tickets for the Lijiang Impressions show:

Taxi: 400 RMB (return)
Tickets for Show: 190 RMB each (760 RMB for family of 4, no kids discount)
Protection Fee: 80 RMB each (320 for family of 4 - they collect this at the check point before entering the park)
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Admission Fee:120 RMB each (480 for family of 4)
Cable Car (optional after show): 170 RMB each (680 for family of 4)

TOTAL: 2640 RMB ($450, not including meals)

We cancelled our tickets once we realized that ultimately it would cost about $500 once we paid for meals, and my kids probably would be bored! I was just disappointed that there were all of these hidden costs associated with seeing the show and no one had really mentioned it. It wasn't until I went to the hotel's concierge to pick up the tickets, that I was told the 'real' price!

Of all my travels in many different countries and having seen innumerable shows indoors and outdoors, this show ranks as one of the very best! The setting is against the splendidly stunning Jade Dragon Snow Mountains-- the performers represent the many different minority tribes of Yunnan, China. The choreography, the written descriptions/explanations, and the very touching music are all part of making this outdoor show exceptional! What's even more moving is in between the lines of what this show means: how the Chinese culture respects the indiginous tribes and includes them along with the mass population in every day living--- from job employments to displaying their cultures in shows and education. This performance is named "Impressions of Lijiang", which says a lot about the Chinese mind-set. Lijiang, as many visitors attest to it, is beautiful in itself with many aspects of ancient cultures and a rich history, besides the indigenous ones. Any great shows can be choreographed to be proudly named "Impressions of Lijiang". However, the city of Lijiang and the government chose the theme of this show to highlight the many tribal cultures in Yunnan. There are more than 26 tribes in Yunnan through the thousand years and they are still thriving, with their livelihood fused into the main Han culture.

We don't even have any shows in the USA that fully pay respect to our Native American cultures here, let alone a show being fully sponsored by the Government. This show was choreographed by China's world-famous director Zhang YiMou who was commissioned by China to design 3 spectacular shows in the whole country thus far: one in Hangzhou, one in Guilin and this one in Yunnan. It is absolutely a MUST SEE for all to experience the beauty, dignity and the sentiments of the many tribes in this performance--- the poetically powerful speech by each of the tribes at the end of this spectacle would move you to tears!

This is truly a spectacular in every sense of the word.
The show, with a cast estimated at approx 500, is staged in an outdoor arena with the Snow Peak Mountain acting as a spectacular backdrop.
Impression Lijiang lasts for about one hour, consisting of two parts: "Impression of Snow Mountain" and "Impression of the Ancient City". Besides music and dance, the show provides an insight into the tradition and lives of the local ethnic people. Around 400 local ethnic Naxi, Bai and Yi people are selected from nearby towns and villages to participate in the performance. They dress up in their ethnic costumes and accessories to perform the singing and dancing, horse riding and drumming, presenting real ethnic atmosphere to the show.

There is not a bad seat in the house and the entire performance was fabulous, great colour and atmosphere.

Our 5 point review:

1. Located at the base of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the venue is perfectly framed by the mountain and the blue sky, a very unique open air venue, a very unique experience!

2. Bring sun protection! Though hats were handed out to protect from the sun, we also brought additional protection including lots of sunscreen and covered our necks and exposed areas wherever possible. The sun can be INTENSE! Be prepared as the show is an hour and change long!

3. Try to pay attention to the subtitles and explanations that talk about the Naxi culture. Parts of the show were very touching, such as the moment where the lovers choose to die together.

4. A pure spectacle. It really was one of the most unique shows I've ever seen, the coordination and pride that the performers (all ethnic minorities of China) show is amazing

5. 500 performers. FIVE HUNDRED! And horses too. The singing and dancing were all great fun and we highly recommend it!

This is an awesome show that you should not miss when visiting Lijiang. The Jade Snow Mountain backdrop, the multi-tiered stage filled with 500 performers in colourful costumes and the use of horses accentuates the visual impact. Throw in nice music and great choreography and it is a show-stopper!

I have seen the other Impression Show at Hangzhou (also bydirector Zhang Yimou). It was a good show - the difference is that the show is at night and over the West Lake. But I think the Lijiang show is the better of the two. Unlike the Hangzhou show, there are themes (like traits of Naxi culture) that you can grasp especially if you can understand Chinese. But it is the overall effect of colours, sounds and lots of performers and horses moving around - even behind you and in the spectator stands - that makes this show stands out.

From my experience at both shows, it is not necessary to pay for VIP tickets. Just buy the normal tickets, go early to get a seat in the centre and you will have a great view. Don't worry about the people in from of you with open umbrellas blocking your view. The ushers will tell them to keep the brollies just before the show starts. And a piece of advice - apply lots of sunblock before you go. The UV is really strong up at 3100m. Enjoy!

Although a little expensive (in addition to paying for the show, you also need to pay the Old Town fee, park entrance fee, and transport to and from the park), it really is worth it. Best idea is to go to the impressions show in the morning and then take the cable car up to Jade Dragon Mountain, followed by a visit to Yak Meadow. This way you only need pay the various entrance fees and transport once.
