Rent a bike and tour as far as you wish along the edge of Erhai Lake. Don’t hesitate to ring your bell when passing near tour groups - they far appreciate the sound over mistakenly backing into your path as you travel by. We visited during a busy day and started where I suppose most people begin their journey (the wharf just 5km from Dali ancient city) and still we were able to go for long stretches without having to share the path and views. A word of caution - two of our bikes broke down en route, make sure you have the contact # of the rental company and they can come and help get you rolling again. Even the newest looking “Forever” or “Merida” brand could disintegrate under modest use, especially if the bike has been poorly assembled.

Took shuttle bus and stopped at several spots along the way. Lots of weddings going on, nice cafes and area to explore. You can also rent a bike to cycle halfway around the lake and back.

The Erhai Lake in Dali is really, really beautiful, especially on sunny days, where the Erhai Lake and the sky seem to be connected, making people feel very relaxed and their hearts return to peace. The wind in Erhai is strong and it blows very cool. However, it should be noted that Erhai Lake belongs to the the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau area, so the ultraviolet ray is very strong, and it needs to strengthen sun protection.

I was traveling around Yunnan and Erhai(and Dali) was the final stop before heading back to Shanghai, having covered Shangrila, lijiang and lugu already. Shuanglang was the first of Dali. It was pleasant, but already had our fair share of ancient towns on this trip, hence was average. My advice is to Take the golf cart in and out as the walk is pretty long(10 kuai). Got on a boat to a tiny island Park(nanzhao), got back and then walked a small bit of the same town. Spent around 4 hours in total. You may cut it short or spend more time based on how it appeals to you. I'd love a bike ride around if I had more time. Very bling luxury cars available outside for rent, incase you'd want to take photos or drive around erhai(I didn't rent one).
Erhai is huge and there are many spots around it.
Other to-sees in Dali:-
Flower garden( huayvmuchang): All seasons, great for pictures, do not chart more than an hour for this, unless you have a girlfriend who loves to be in photos.
Dali Ancient town: refreshing as it was less commercial and more authentic than the Lijiang ancient town.
Cangshan mountains: spent around 4 hours there and is another must visit in Dali.
Three Pagodas: another must see in Dali.
Foreigners Street at the ancient town. Expected much more on New year's Eve 2020, but seemed pretty dry. Two days later, stumbled upon the other side(rennin road), and wished we had gone there for new year's.
Call outs: do not know if erhai and all these towns will be as peaceful post-covid when tourism is back to normal.

The lake is beautiful , nothing extraordinary as there are many beautiful lakes in China . But this place is special to me cos this is where I had my first e scooter ride . Don’t need special license . Anyone can try it . Go for it if you have never done it . And of course the beautiful lake just made everything perfect . One point to note , get the Ai pay or we chat working for everyone because each person will need to scan the QR code . You will also need to enter your passport details . You cant have one person scanning for a few others .

A very large lake though only 23rd largest in china. This is off peak season but already rather crowded. Hundreds of bike, cafe, restaurant businesses around the lake. Rather clear waters

Lake is ok, but the drive is boring, full of unfinished constructions sites, dusty roads, poorly maintenance overview points and traffic.

I traveled to Dali 1 years ago, and spend 1 night in Shuanglang, which is a beautiful small village besides Erhai Lake. I think this might be the best place around Erhai Lake with less tourists, local ethnic people, local food and more. Just enjoy your day with fantastic lake view and with stress-free.
There are many good places to go around Erhai Lake, if you have more time, I will recommend Haishe Park for you. The park is near Xizhou Village. The scenery here is breath-taking, and with almost no tourists at all. Sunset here is highly recommended.

I boarded a ferry for a ride around the Erhai with my kids and wife. The entire trip was entertaining as there were locals performing their traditional dance and serving their famous tea to tourist. All these treats were included in the ferry ticket. What is more surprising was that there were 2 stops over on the 2 islands where tourist were able to take nice photos. We were very delighted to have such nice shots taken. Total time taken is about 3.5 hours. So a little advice is to ensure you have sufficient time for this ferry ride. Simply love it.

How much is the boatride to see the Comorants catching fish
Written July 22, 2015
Hi where did you go to take the boat ride? I mean which village around the lake?
Written July 20, 2015
HI,
I actually did not know the town but I believe those saying Longkan are correct. We just showed the taxi driver Caicun on a map because we thought it was there and she figured it out and took us to the dock. Remember there are two ferry rides, the long one and the short one we did. Yes, it only goes in the middle but that was long enough for us to get a sense of the size and beauty of the lake and the visits were interesting without being too long. Bon voyage!
