This village is the center of the Bai minority people. The colorful tie dye is everywhere. The people are warm and friendly and the food is some of the best I have in China. Do not miss the homemade cheese that is paper thin and then deep fried. It turns a golden brown and is crispy, delicious. The tie dye museum and factory anchor the south end of town. The north is marked by the famous Butterfly Spring and next to that an UNESCO Environmental Park, one of a handful in the world. In the center is one of the nicest hotel I have stayed in. A total surprise The White Manor Hotel is elegance and grace in the most unexpected place. Luxury in the Heart of the Village is their motto and they are not incorrect. Our room had a large private patio with an outdoor soaking tub. We just stayed for two days but sunrise each day was spectacular.
I love this village too because it is the narrowest area between the beautiful Lake Erhai and the sacred Mountain. From my balcony I could see and absorb both at once. No other village can offer this experience. I may have had to leave but I have left part of my heart there with the people, Lake, Mountain and White Manor. I will return to visit all of them as soon as I can.

We arrived here taking a shared minivan from the North Gate of Dali: we were the only foreigners and nobody spoke English, but we asked the staff from our guesthouse to write in Chinese the name of the village. It was easy. We arrived before lunch and there was the market in the main square: we were the only tourists and no one cared about us. It was very authentic, with women dressed with colourful clothes. Walking uphill you will find a nice buddist temple. There are some women in the street that will try to take you in their yard to show you the tie-dye tecnique and to sell you overpriced clothes and fabrics. Be prepared to bargain over if you want to buy something.

Visited a tye dying factory, interesting process and then we were shown the shop. I bought a scarf, a mistake later saw it was half the price in Old Dali town. All their products had inflated prices.

The tour guy took us to a family-owned tie-dye fabric multi-purpose house. It can be a factory or show room or store or home. When we went there, no one came to greet us and over 10 ladies were very busy cooking at the back. The court yard was set up with tables . Later they even closed their showroom. Some people from our tour group found out one of their family members was getting married on that day, that’s why the whole place was closed for business, and getting ready for wedding ceremony and banquet. Before we left we wished them well. Some of our tour members even took photos with the couple to be. I'd rather share their happiness than see the tie-dye demonstration.

While I am interested in fabrics, Zhoucheng is too in your face with very aggressive locals trying to drag you into their shops. Seeing batiks produced is interesting. Asking prices were 5+ times those asked in Dali Old Town. I suggest that you buy in the old town rather than enduring Zhoucheng. Not worth it.

If you are looking at buying some local flavor gifts which don't take much space in your baggage, stopping in Zhoucheng is handy.
There is one dying shop where you can see their techniques and buy at the lowest prices we saw in the area.
They dye with flower petals and before dipping the cloth in the baths, they have a special way of sewing some areas tight so that the color does not penetrate in those areas. After drying, they cut the threads and it reveals the white patterns which will serve a base to complete the decoration work with other colors.
Not sure what the name of the place was but we asked a taxi driver to take us to a dying shop and this is the one he indicated saying it was the most popular one.

Came here for a tie dye workshop. This is a small and quiet town, not like the larger Dali ancient or old town. The tie dye was quite fun

We had more fun here than in Xizhou (which is more advertised), it is just north of it. We went to visit the place where they do the tie-dying - tablecloths won't be cheaper but at least you get to experience the whole process, which is fascinating. The market is in the afternoon (Xishou in the morning) and is also very interesting for the many fruits and vegetables unknown to Western people.

A lovely area in Dali which can be a stopping point while visiting the Butterfly park or can be used for a nice stroll around another interesting area away from the main Ancient Town.
Lots of textiles and shops but there are quite a few interesting points that you will happen across as you wander.
Lovely photo opportunity over the water right off the main road which enters the village.

This town specializes in textiles. It sees less foreign tourists than others in the area. We stopped at a small tie die operation and they demonstrated the various techniques. Plenty of things for sale but not much pressure. The people were very friendly.
