Dawenkou town hosts a small museum with replicas of pottery found at the Neolithic site just across the road. The museum is supposed to be expanded soon, but as it is, it's very small and dusty. The museum guide, who was out to lunch when we arrived, spoke no English. However, we had our own guide who translated for us. The signage throughout the museum was minimal. Tihere were stone grinders and other stone implements in the courtyard without any explanatory texts, so we were unsure where these had been found. It really was a "back water" museum of the kind found in China many years ago.
The village site is being excavated but looked abandoned. As archaeologists, we were interested in where the site was located in relation to the river, what crops were cultivated 7000 years ago, what types of houses the people built, and what types of pottery they made. The original pottery is now housed in the Shandong Provincial Museum in Jinan.
Dawenkou is approximately 2 hours from Jinan by car, and probably not worth the visit except for die-hard archaeologists.
