Not often do you find a memorial in a natural setting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Loved seeing the names of those gave the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom of our great country.

We went there because we believed there was a dog park here, there is no off leash area. My dog was let run in the sand volley ball area (don't worry I cleaned up after her!)
Other than that, the playground is AWESOME for the kids and there are ball fields and concession stands too. I cannot wait to return when the butterfly garden is blooming!
My sister is a widow of an Army Veteran and she just loved the circle of flags and the very nice tribute to our men and women in (and out of) uniform

Tucked away up a short driveway just of I-495 is a quiet place to walk among the monuments depicting Alabama's Veterans. The day we visited the Boy Scouts were repaving the walkway from the parking lot to the monument area. It is slightly uphill and anyone who cannot walk without assistance for several hundred feet may meet to be assisted. Be sure to say a silent prayer and a Thank You to all the Veterans everywhere, past and present.

Been driving by this place for years and never stopped. Ive been twice now and will go again. Each time i will take a friend so others will experience and hopefully share. Truely a hidden gem that everyone in and around Birmingham will visit. If you're just passing through, its a convenient stop just a minute off I-459. You can spend a lot or a little time here...but you need to go.

I first visited the memorial park years ago to check on the step stone paver our family purchased in memory of my father. As this was a beautiful fall day and I was in the area, I pulled off the Interstate to visit the park again. There is no entry fee, just a box to encourage donations. The walkway is level and seems to be accessible to wheelchairs and rollator walkers although the beginning of the trail is not paved. Brick paving stones line a good part of the trail and there are benches placed so that visitors can rest and reflect. I first went to the American Flag Plaza and quickly found my dad's brick among the 500+ pavers ($100 to purchase). Then I spent time at the Memorial Plaza at the end of the trail. This area has 36 free standing columns to honor Alabama heroes, including Medal of Honor recipients. Embedded in the columns are brushed aluminum plaque castings by Alabama artists. These are very moving patriotic scenes and "letters home". The Hall of Honor temple stands behind the columns and contains the names of over 11,000 Alabamians who lost their lives in the defense of freedom.

It is in the woods. The pathway is very well done with the brick and concrete - it can be a little difficult to see it with all the fall leaves on it.

The columns are incredible. It is very well done. And then the back room with the names. Very moving.

I can only imagine what it would be like on Veterans Day or Memorial Day.

For sure a hidden gem.

A lovely memorial in a beautiful setting. Extremely peaceful and respectful capturing a number of conflicts throughout time. I particularly loved the little plaques that were incorporated into the pillars and the wires from leaders throughout the various decades. They were really poignant and caught the essence of the place wonderfully. This isn't a large memorial but it is definitely worth taking the time go visit and remember.

Having lived in Washington, D.C. for approx. four years, I saw my fair share of monuments. However, I was blown away by the Alabama Veterans Memorial Park. Must admit, the entrance leaves much to be desired, but standing at the base of the flagpole overlooking the valley and mountain range on the horizon really put my position in the world into perspective. Next, I followed the trail to what looked like a building with columns holding up the sky. Walking among them, circling, passing deeper and deeper through the rows, I was struck by the steel-poured placques that mixed art with stories of Alabamians who lost their lives in defense of this country and my singular ability to stand and read their story. It felt like a personalization of the Korean War Memorial on The Mall in D.C. Everyone was silent as they wound through the columns. Thinking was more than enough, I started to search for the exit only to find a room with more. Poetic justice was that it didn’t have a roof, but was open to the heavens.
I took the path back to my car with the sounds of nature and my heartbeat bringing me back to earth.
