Pleasantly Surprised ! Pretty Darned Ok.
May 2021
We stopped at 10 am to stretch our legs on a long car trip.
- Upon entering they will ask for your ID no matter how old you are. They will ask you to step back and turn around. They asked my husband to lift his shirt to show his belt while turning. I'm not sure how I felt about all this, but in the end I felt really safe. This process seemed to take a long time. I imagine if they start getting a good crowd of people coming in, they will have to do something different.
- Inside the a/c temperature was perfect.
- We were there when they opened so there was no smoke. I don't think they allow smoking and there was a huge smoking area outside.
- At 10:30 am I did not see any place open that served food or alcohol. But there was an area that looked like it could serve drinks and snacks in the back furthest corner.
- No free drinks at this casino - bummer.
- All the machines were brand new. Lots of lights on the machines and very clean. Nice heavy and comfortable chairs.
- There are signs on all the machines stating to leave an empty space unless you're with the person. Nice!
- I don't know how the machines work. They say it's based on old dog races. They look exactly like the machines at other casinos in the US. Just as much fun.
- I did not see any penny machines, which I LOVE. The lowest I could find was 25 cents and that was only one. Lots of 30 cent and 40 cent machines. Some up to $5.
Money spends way, way too quickly when playing 50 cents a spin.
- The casino area is downstairs. I'm not sure what is upstairs. I think dog and horse betting.
- The crowd was not what I'm used to in big city casinos. Seemed very local.
- The thunderbird they are giving away in June looked garage kept. In great condition. Very cute.
- The odds seemed pretty normal compared to other casinos.

All in all, I won't likely go back because I love penny and 5 cent machines way too much. I also liked to get free drinks while I sit and gamble. Plus, they didn't have invaders from the planet mula or farmville.

Carlotta and Sherry were so kind on our visit!! Be sure to get a program and tip sheets!! We stayed for all 14 races. Though the facility is dated, it was clean and beer was cold!!

This place is large, it could use a few upgrades, but, a nice place to hangout with family and friends.

The former Birmingham Turf Course - now a dog track
Apr 2018 • Couples
Its so sad to see this place knowing its history. When originally opened it was touted as a premiere horse racing venue that had the entire state excited. Now its a sad dirty dog track with little to offer in the way of entertainment.

Not bad
Jul 2017 • Family
We went to the 2pm race. If you take kids, avoid first floor. It looked like the gambling and drinking crowd. The second floor was closed for renovation. Third floor was nice. New carpet. Chairs were clean. We sat next to the glass windows and it got hot. Eventually moved up further away and it was much cooler. Third floor had a much nicer crowd. Some people were having food brought to their tables.
We walked to where they let the doggies go out. Nice for the kids to see them up close through the glass. There is no outside seating.
Doggies ran in the rain. Parking is free. They offer valet parking.
Expect to show ID repeatedly in first floor if you look young.

Not for the Meek or Mild
Jun 2016 • Couples
Everything is televised and the clientele is very colorful as well as the language. It is not a place for ladies to go by themselves. Individuals do not clean up behind themselves, so there are papers and beer bottles all around. Just something different to do and people watch.

Very Dated and Dilapidated

The service was great and the experience of watching the dogs was fun but the facility is horribly dated, dirty and overall not appealing.

A fun day!
May 2015 • Friends
We go to the Birmingham Race Track for the simulcast racing (on TV's), usually during the big races like the Preakness, Kentucky Derby, etc. Fun day! Usually spend about 6 hour betting our 'wad' on various combinations of bets on the various races. Lots of fun. Full bar. Kitchen. Waitress service...and when you really get excited 'Live' dog races on the track in front of you!
