We picked Red Mountain Park because their trails opened at 7am. We started on the Eureka Mines Trail at Frankfurt Dr Parking, which connects to the BMRR South Trail, then the Shook Trail, which leads to Grace’s Gap Overlook. AllTrails ranks this as the best hike near Birmingham, but I have to admit, I was pretty underwhelmed. I did get to see my first live armadillo – all the ones I’ve seen in Texas have been run over – but overall, I wish we’d been able to hike Ruffner instead.

We were very excited to visit this area and enjoy the climbing activities. Our trip was delayed and never considered making a call to assure we would still be able to participate in the climb adventure. Upon arrival we were told there was no one available so we just walked around the area but our "happy bubble" had been bursted. Oh well, perhaps another time!

My boys and I love Red Mountain. We have tried all of the adventures (ropes course, zipline, climbing wall) and they were all great ways to spend an afternoon. The adventure guides are really fun and they do a great job with safety. We also love coming out here just to hike and picnic. There are fun short trails, along with longer ones, so lots of options for an afternoon.

Red Mountain Zip Line Park is closer than you think and completely different than any other zip lines my family have done. Directions to the park are awful as they don't have a parking area associated with the trail system, challenge course or zip lines, you just park on the street with all of the other cars in the corner. There is a short hike up to the make shift cargo container turned office. By now they could have sold drinks, hot days, bring your own. After a short rigging fitting and acquaintance briefing you're off on a short hike and climb to you first station. This course does include a backward zip line (weird feeling) and pendulum swing.

I certainly would not suggest the zip lines in this park. While zip lining there in March, the rope broke and I fell almost 20 feet slamming my head into a tree stump. After spending 6 hours in the UAB Emergency Room, I was cleared of injuries. The fall was witnessed by my wife and 9 year old son who were both injured while being helped out of the tree. The result of my trip to Red Mountain was a $3,200 medical bill that the State owned park refuses to cover. Needless to say, I wouldn't recommend this place.

My husband, dog, and I have hiked these relatively new trails at Red Mountain Park twice. We were not that impressed. The land itself is noticeably scarred from its history of having been mined for iron-ore. Trail overlooks reveal some old, rather depressing industrial sections of Birmingham. The forests here are still the very early stages of recovery, after decades of disuse and abuse. The zip lines look like fun, but prices for a ticket are not cheap.
If you are interested in seeing and learning about this aspect of the city's history, you will enjoy this park. The trails are well marked, and information placards appear at regular intervals.
But if you are looking for a beautiful place where you can observe and enjoy the natural flora and fauna of this region, I recommend that you head for Oak Mountain State Park instead.

My husband and I hiked for a few hours in the the park this afternoon. So much fun! The trails we hiked were mostly through the woods and shady. We enjoyed watching people do the zip line. They all looked like they were having a blast. Be sure to pick up a map at the trailhead. All of the trails are very well marked and well maintained. My only regret is that we did not go to Grace's Overlook. Next time!!!

We were really excited to visit the park with our 7 year old son. I may not have researched thoroughly and found that only the trails were open when we visited. My son wanted to do some of the adventure areas and they were all closed. It looked like a neat park and a lot to explore, even if you just want to hike or bike.

We went here on a last minute decision. Had a morning free before our flight and we are so glad we ended up at Red Mountain. The trails are very clean and well marked. Lots of puppies- so if you have a dog it's a great place to take them. Just wish we had more time to explore the other trails. Also, it was free- just recommended donations

If you are wanting to spend an afternoon hiking or at a park, there are much better parks in Bham. The location is not convenient, and the parking is terrible. They do have nice trails and views at some points, but most of the trails do not have access to water (e.g., creek, stream, etc.) so if you take your dog make sure to bring water. I also have done the ropes course. For me personally, it was not worth the money. The first couple are fun, but then after that it is much of the same thing. However, they were children in our group and they appeared to enjoy it a lot more than we did. I also just recently visited their new dog park and was not really impressed. The facilities were well-kept, but the Hoover Dog Park is much better.
