This temple is called Guan Lin (關林) in Chinese. In Chinese culture, for the sake of respect, the tomb of an Emperor is called “Ling” (陵,mausoleum). then the tomb of a Saint is called “Lin” (林,forest).

There are only two great man’s tombs named “Lin” in China. One is “Kong Lin (孔林)” for Confucius (the Saint of culture and education), the other is “Guan Lin (關林)” for Guan Yu (the Saint of War).

Guan Yu played a significant role in the establishment of Liu Bei's state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period (220–280 AD).

In Chinese folk religion, Guan Yu is referred to as "Emperor Guan" or “Saint of War”. Emperor Guan’s temples and shrines were widely established across mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and even Korea, Vietnam and Japan. For example, Hsing Tian Kong (行天宮,Guan's Temple) in Taipei is one of the most worshiped temple in Taiwan.

In a final battle, Guan Yu was captured by the enemy, and was executed by capitation. His body was buried at Dangyang, Hubei Province (Dangyang Guan Mausoleum), and his head was buried here.

Recent archeological investigations suggested that the real place of the tomb of Guan Yu’s head might be at Guan Town (關庄) in the rural area of Luoyang.

However, this place is still the largest temple and memorial garden dedicated to Gaunyu.

This one is a real gem. It is a beautiful and colourful temple from the 16th century that honours Guan Yu (Guan Gong). He was a general in ancient China, but he has become a Taoist god. You might recognise his long bearded red face as he is a Chinese icon. The temple is also his tomb and at the back of the complex is a huge funeral mound.

It is different from other Chinese temples and really is worth spending forty minutes or an hour wandering around. There are some marvellous statues and the temple is beautifully decorated. It is only 4.5 km from Longmen Grottoes, so they combine very well to make a good day in Luoyang.

We pointed to this site on our map and showed it to our driver thinking it was the White Horse Temple. When we arrived, we were blown away how stunning this facility is. It was the White Horse which is also wonderful, but this temple was one of the most beautiful we visited during our trip to China. If I have my story straight, I believe it is the temple where Confuscious, Taoist, and Buddhist were all represented. I sacred place and very beautiful. If visiting Luoyang, I would say this and the Grottoes were my favorite sites.

If you know the ancient history of China, say the early 200's, or if you've heard of the Romance of Three Kingdoms, one of China's most brilliant novel trilogies, or if you've ever stepped into a temple, restaruant, bank, or any kind of building in Asia (Hong Kong, Macau, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Korea, and Japan mostly), then you've noticed a figure somewhere holding a long spear, sometimes on a red horse, with an extremely long beard and fierce face. His name is Guan Yu, and he's awesome in Chinese history. His real story has been lost to the novels and legends that formed around him. A commander once to General Liu Bei, Guan Yu was a respected individual, even by enemy Generals like Cao Cao. Guan Yu's good deeds and heroic demeanor eventually turned him into a God of variety and splendor in Asia. He's not only considered the God of War but the God of Theater, Wealth, Temple Protector, and so forth. The Guanlin Temple was built by General Cao Cao, which houses Guan Yu's head, in honor of him and his amazing feats. It's a pretty place and lots of shopping around it, if you're interested.

Guan Yu was a general of the kingdom of Shu during the three kingdom period in ancient China and a hero respected by the Chinese community. The General's head was buried in the temple. For people who know the history , they usually come here to pay their respect. This place is worth a visit for those who are interested in Chinese architecture and culture.

I was told by the tour guide that only two persons in Chinese history have been given the honor "Lin", i.e. Guan Gong (General Guan) and Confucius. And Guan Gong is was highly revered during his days as a person of courage and integrity, and is now considered a god/deity. The temple is nicely built and laid out, and has a very peaceful feeling. A good place to pay respect to one of the most honoured person in Chinese history.

If you are a fan of the romance of 3 kingdoms novel then perhaps its one of the place that you may want to visit when you are at Luoyang. But honestly the whole place is very underwhelming and you have to pay 50 yuan to just go into a normal temple. I will have given this a miss. Probably you can spend less than 1 hour in this location.

You can do this along with Longmen Grottos and the White Horse Temple(temple of the horse that travelled with Tripitaka/ Xuanzang), then you can finish off the night at Lijing Gate shopping street and Luoyang Pagoda tourist site.

There are many statues here and quite a colorful place. Upon entering, there's his Sabre on the left pagoda and his horse on the right. You get to visit a few temples with several of his idols/ statues, and one particular one seems like what his room would have been-with him reading on one side and sleeping on the other.

There is also a room just for praying his wife if I am not wrong. There are a few odd-looking fanciful trees that were given fanciful names related to 3Kingdoms as well.

Outside of the temple is a garden with old animal statue-relics which you might be interested in.

I went to Jingzhou before this. So it's good that I came here too. His body is buried elsewhere which didn't quite fit my itinerary so this is the best I can do.

I went with my dad. This place is easy. Under 1 hour is enough I think. You do not need a guide in either of the places I went in Luoyang but you definitely do need a driver if you want to save time. It's not as developed as Beijing or Xi'An so you cannot expect the public transport to be easy.

My driver for that day was a young chap. He is friendly and not costly. In fact, he even offered to bring us to an additional place that I did not know of, when he could have just sent us off to hotel and go back to rest.

Guan Yu was a general from the state of Shu during the Three Kingdom Period. He was also one of the 3 sworn brothers, the others being Liu Bei and Zhang Fei.

This is a place to visit for those who have read about the loyalty and bravery of Guan Yu, and fans of the Romance of the Three Kingdom. Guan Yu Is revered for his loyalty and righteous and is worshipped by Hong Kong Police force and members of the triads and gangs. Visiting Guanlin was an opportunity to experience history first hand for me. It is also one of few attractions in Luoyang. There is an entrance fee to this temple.

Guanlin is the final resting place for Guan Yu's head. After he was captured and decapitated by Sun Quan's men, the head was sent to Cao Cao as a tribute as well as to shift the blame. Cao Cao ordered the killing of Guan Yu's killers and gave Guan Yu a funeral befitting a hero. Cao Cao ordered a wooden body to be buried with the head so that Guan Yu can be complete and intact in death. Of course, it was also a ploy by Cao Cao to break the alliance between the State of Wu and Shu. This can also be found on an inscription on the wall of Guan Yu's tomb.

As an avid fan of 3 Kingdom, I didn't need a guide as I explored the halls where wooden carvings of stories from 3 Kingdoms were displayed. There are also statues of Guan Yu reading and sleeping.

This is a mausoleum that has become a temple. This is because Guan Yu is worshipped as a God of War. Hence, worshippers come and burn offerings. It can get very smokey from the burning incense.

The temple also contains many artifacts such as inscriptions by Empress Cixi, and emperors from the Song, Ming, Qing dynasties.
To fully appreciate this place, one must be familiar with Guan Yu and stories of his exploits in the Three Kingdom. Else, it would be just another temple, as there is little information available in the temple.

I felt this place was different from other temple in Chinese. I've been near the closing time and found it's very peaceful and spiritual place. It's very impressively place and much over than my expectation.
