The gate and the old town are definitely worth a visit, and certainly give you a view into historical China. There a lots of vendors, including a plethora of street cooking. This is a good stroll.

spent a great day wandering the streets around here - very interesting - I didn't see one western tourist that afternoon - easy to wander and become absorbed into the life of LuoYang

The old town district is a great place to see how Luoyang' market place used to be before the shopping malls came in. Something like the English high street ...

There is a pottery shop no 263(?) owned by Tang Ge or Tang Di depending on how old you are. I bought some Handmade pottery cups as souvenir and am really pleased with it. Ask them to explain the history and tradition of these cups and the various clay sources from the region. Helps if you understand Chinese. They cannot take international credit or debit cards, as it's a small business, at least at the time I was there.

Also do try a lovely Chinese dessert shop - made and cooked by the owner himself. Not expensive and very soothing soupy desert for rMB 2. It's no.87 but I do not know the street name. Picture below.

We can't go inside the drum tower, but the area around it is full of vendors and old buildings that one can expect to find in an old Chinese town.

Old town will soon be under reconstruction, but for now most of the buildings are in poor shape. Near the drum tower you can find cheaper art shops than those near the main gate, and even further down this road, past the Drum tower you can find a meat market.

The drum tower is quite nice to look at but that is it. It is not lighted in the dark. However, if you walk though it you'll end up in nice little streets with a highly recommendable night market.

The drum tower is quite lovely in its dilapidated state and it is very atmospheric in the way it frames the street. It is at the quieter end of the old town and there were no other tourists when I visited. It's worth seeing, but it isn't going to make or break your visit to Luoyang.

When you have some spare time apart from visiting the Longmen Grottoes and the Shaolin Temple, you certainly should visit the old town of Luoyang with its Hutongs, Drum Tower and the Old Gate.

The Old Town is actually a street of 2 km long, with some side roads. There is a beautiful Drum tower and the Old City Gate, the only remaining part of the old city wall.

The Hutongs are more authentic than the Hutongs in Beijing. Houses are very old, crumbling, humid and on every entrance you can see 6-7 electricity meters. People must live here in very cramped conditions. Here you can see why the government wants to sanitize this old quarters.

The whole street is full of small shops selling art, brushes and ink for calligraphy, shops with spices, bakeries. You don’t seen any tourists here.

The entrance of the Longmen Grottoes was flooded, so we could not visit it. In stead we have been to the old town of Luoyang. We had a very great time.
