The Potala has a beautiful and infinite scenery. Temple on the mountain is magnificent, the layout is natural and is rich in change. It is almost the Buddhism architectural style. The main buildings are located on the top of the mountain. The layout and momentum of the whole temple imitate the Potala Palace in Lhasa, commonly known as "Potala Palace". Emperor qianlong received wubaxi-xing and held grand activities such as lecturing on scriptures, saying sayings and celebrating birthdays.

Lasha is famous for its Potala Temple. However, it is too far away and too up high. So, if you want to get a similar feeling, visit Chengde's Small Potala instead. Chengde is located about 230Km north-east of Beijing. It is a popular one or two day trip destination for expatriates living in Beijing. It still takes 3 1/2 hours to get there from Beijing by car, the express way is under construction. When it is complete, it may take just two hours, I believe. The city of Chengde is worth visiting because many impressive sites are located side by side. My favorites are (1) Small Potala Temple, (2) Imperial Summer Palace, (3) Puning Temple. It took me 5 hours to visit just the above three. Other than those, there are 6 more outside temples, 8 in total. That's why some people stay over there. Again it is not easy to get there, but it is a worth while.

I have seen it called three different names: The Small Potala Palace or Putuo Zongcheng Temple or the Temple of Potalaka--either way, it was pretty awesome and we was really happy to visit. We took a one day trip over from Beijing using an English speaking driver from Beijing and this was our final stop and we were all pretty tired. Like all sights built hundreds of years ago (late 1700's) there are a lot of stairs and we climbed them all and it was worth it!
The Temple here is quite large, over 2.4 million sq feet and is a replica of the Buddhist Palace in Tibet, so it has both architectural styles. I have heard from a local that the Tibet palace is likely to close to the public soon and that this is a close replica. It was simple but beautiful. I am happy we took the time to stop.
At the top, you could purchase of flag to go up a pole. There was a three story Buddha inside. It was a bit tricky to find the stairs to the inside, but they do exist on either end. The inside was beautiful.

When you have climbed the many steps of the palace and you arrive on the main terrace, you could be in Tibet with the flags and the vows of the priests. The palace is probably one of the most beautiful place in Chengde and definitely worth to be visited

Wear good shoes and maybe bring a flashlight. Some of the walking here and the other temple including in admission is a little sketchy. Many of the rooms and staircases have little to no light so it'd help to have a flash light or something handy. It's pretty dark. The outside of the temple was cool to see since it's different from so many of the other temples you can see in China. It was also very easy to get to (took bus 118).

Ten-minutes away from the Imperial Summer Resort by bus, we got to the Potala Palace, a cluster of white-red buildings sprawling on a hill on the right.
However, this one is not a miniature of the one in Lhasa, Tibet, in any sense. The small, square windows of the one are not real; they are painted. No monks whatsoever in this one, except a few girls on a higher floor offering visitors especially women fee-paid written pledges on colorful ribbons.
Walking up the hill by stairs to its top is a challenge, but it’s worth the the time and the sweat. The whole building is well-maintained and clean. It’s especially exiting to see the gold-plated roof of a central pavilion on the top floor seemingly as a trophy for my exhausted climbing.
Tip: Do keep your admission ticket and take a free electric wagon in front of the entrance to the next stop, Panchen Palace, for FREE.
Warning: stay away from its back. Get into the building from a side entrance rather then from its back. I misunderstood a slope on its back leading to the top and was obstructed by constructions. No visitors there except wind blowing through then.

Exhilarating climb up this building to see the panoramic view of Chengde. Lots of souvenir vendors on the way up and down this landmark but they preferred payment in local currency or dollars. Good to get some souvenirs to mark this memorable trip!
