Fan making ... nice strolling ... rural market
Nov 2019
A photographers paradise of different craftsmen, markets, people watching and food stalls. We got to the city by a small people ferry. We strolled through the city and enjoyed the beautiful day.

Interesting Food at Fuli Market
Nov 2019
Biked with a guide from Shaungtan northeast of Yangshuo to Fuli Market. Very interesting noodle lunch and cakes. Glad to have the guide as little English was spoken.
Actually, took a ferry across the river and parked the bikes with a local house.
Pleasant day and less touristy stuff. More of a local's market feel.

Fuli is moving fast from Ancient
Apr 2019 • Family
We had our maps but were confounded pretty fast. Luckily, we befriended a local school teacher who got us heading the right way.

We footed our way through to this town. What we saw initially, was unlike what we expected. A new town is developing where the old town was. Many of the old buildings decrepit and dilapidated are at the fringes of this new town still populated by old people.

Another friendly sound at the ,yes you guessed right, at the requisite Guilin Mi shop pointed us towards the much vaunted fans and old buildings.

All of this commerce of fans and antiques is on one alley, which is called a main road by the locals, it bends down to the river where there is temple and wishing tree.
It is also the tourist trap for bamboo boat rides up river. Bamboo has been 'upgraded' to PVC pipes among most of the newer boats.

We did spend some time browsing through the fan shops watching a few local tourists bully the vendors into a bargain price.

There were fan making expositions and fan painting classes. It looked like most of the Masters had retired and their children headed to the big cities for a better living. Children sent back money for the families to build 3 or 4 story homes on a little plot of land. Those who couldn't languished in their old structures waiting for fate to carry them on.

It was a nice place but an exaggerated tourist dive for guides and locals to make a living scalping tourists.

This is a very rural area so nobody speaks English.
You can access by motorbike.
Riding in ancient laneways in Fuli was the most memorable part of our trip in Guilin.

April Fuli!
Apr 2019 • Family
What an amazing experience! Everything was open. The people were very kind and helpful, especially at the bamboo boat pier. What a deal! So much to do and see; totally set up for tourists. Super easy to get to and a great place to spend a day of your vacation. All construction complete so no mess at all. A must see... April Fuli’s! Avoid at all cost.

Little more authentic out this way ...
Oct 2018 • Family
I enjoyed the market and do feel it has maintained its authenticity even though tourists flood in. The markets had everything you can imagine for sale, but I really enjoyed walking down the old streets and learning about the red couplets, thresholds and culture. We bought some fans from a very nice lady who I'm pretty sure wasn't overselling.

Small and a little intense

Fuli is in many ways an authentic little town in the sense that it has little for tourists other than sporadic souvenir purchases. You won't find quiet cafes to sit in, but you will be regularly called on to buy things from street sellers. I got the feeling this was a quick pit-stop for tour groups, and that the locals weren't doing very well out of the tourists who descended.

We biked over from Yangshuo, which was a great ride, but there wasn't really anywhere convenient to rest when we got there.

You can do two things at once in Fuli Old Town: 1) all the souvenir shopping you want at family run shops 2) cruise the river with minimal other tourists

Great place to absorb how the locals live
May 2018 • Couples
We headed to this town primarily to do some rafting on the River Li, however, the town itself was worth exploring. We stopped at the Peng Family Fan Factory where two sisters explained and showed how they make fans. There are now 5th generation fan makers in their family and they were able to show what generation made the fans. We were so disappointed when a funeral prevented us from walking back that way....we would have bought some fans for sure. On our diversion to the washrooms and the different walk back, we saw some local temple shrines (be careful about taking pics - some don't like it) and we also saw inside various homes....pretty basic living conditions.

The market more specialized world
Oct 2017 • Friends
Our guide not led directly to a large wedge of ancient architecture in iron with a lot of posts all kinds of vegetables that in your life you can imagine there are varieties in China. There are tables where people eat and can share the place in these cookers you will find with the locals who were eating dog meat cooked in large pots of iron, fritters, puffy dough, cakes of all kinds. A large market of form cutting where far are still there are more stalls of food, clothing, shoes, flowers, tubers, never seen. Visit it because you will love.
