Hundreds of years old houses. Feeling the ancient city wall was extremely exciting. There are many touristy shops and snack eateries. A lot of them have names which also seem strange to my Chinese colleagues.

This wall is near to monumental arches (Paifang street) and alongside the Han river.
Spend a day travelling to all the surrounding sites and savour some local delicacies e.g. fried oyster (蚝烙) , soup dessert "ya mu nian"(鸭母捻).
Ya mu nian is similar to cheng teng (清汤) in Singapore, liu wei tang (六味汤) and "tau teng" in Thailand.

This is a nice marketplace for visitor to shop for souvenirs.
The decor of the place mimic the old Chinese marketplace.

Chaozhou appears to me an historic ancient little town with many of the attractions well concentrated near the Arch Street. There is the historic Kaiyuan Temple, the magnificent ancient Guangji Bridge and the numerous dilapidated old houses that are well contained in the ancient city wall.
The fortress wall enhances the historic flavor of this small ancient city. I felt lost in time tunnel wandering along the shop-packed Arch streets tasting the wonderful Teochew cuisine delights.
The city is very walkable and I enjoyed the pleasure of my exploration, both of the city and her traditional cuisine delights. The fortress wall is located in segment near to the boulevard and looking across the Guangji Bridge and the beautiful Hanjiang River.
While it gives a sense of protection against attack from the Hanjiang River, I felt the historic ancient fortress wall actually contains and restricts the movement of the citizens of Chaozhou to explore beyond the horizons.
History, however, demonstrated that the fortress wall did not stop the overseas Chaozhou people from venturing abroad to find a better livelihood. These overseas Teochew migrants are an adventurous and resilient lot.
Their endurance and ability to overcome adversity and obstacles and their determination to survive and established themselves to prosper in foreign lands created many inspiring and encouraging struggle stories for the younger generation to emulate and to venture beyond this little town to search for greener pastures.
The historic walls cannot contain their adventurous spirit. Many Teochews from this little town are now great entrepreneurs in many parts of the world. This town is proud to hear of the many successful stories that they brought home.
Many of these overseas businessmen did not forget their home town that once brought them to this world and had returned to Chaozhou and Shantou to contribute to the prosperity of the motherland.
The arches erected at Taiping Street demonstrated the scholarly achievement of the academic Teochew; the fortress wall resembles the lighthouse pointing outward to the horizon beyond and guiding the entrepreneurial Teochew people to venture abroad for a better living.
I like the latter group.

This is a great location to start off your adventure of Chaozhou. The city gate itself is a historical show piece, top of the wall is accessible with view of Guang Qi Bridge in front and Pai Fang street behind. Across the bridge is the famous Han Wen Gong temple.
Everything here is history and art. From the bridge, with multiple sections of amusing architecture with adorned with calligraphy, to the old houses and temples adorned with unique Chaozhou intricate wood carve and procelain art.
Old houses along the side lanes of Pai Fang street are covered with beautiful paintings of stories in Chinese history, multi-layered wood carving with miniture figures so live like. A few of these places are now art houses promoting arts, especially the famous double sided embroidery, Chaozhou opera and colourful pictures made with pocelain art.
While you're in this area, ensure to try out different Chaozhou food and tea art.
If you're into art and culture, this is a great place to be. Spend at least a full week here. There are other great outdoor places with beautiful scenery as well.

The whole street filled with tourists. After having visited the ancient KuanYim temple within walking distance, we were enroute towards the ancient fort overlooking Hanjiang River. The place theme with tourist bargain hunting for some peanut snacks, toys, fruits & roast goose to bring home or even just a simple tickle of the taste buds. A kilogram of Mulberrys which much look like black berries are only 5rmb, we had 2 kilograms. Sweet & juicy. Must admit, the "lion headed braised goose" (we had them for 2 whole days of dinner & supper) are 5 stars. really tasty & its gizzards crunchy. We Teochew's will miss these back home. The huge wings, livers, gizzards, webs, skin & neck goes really well with red wine. Our supper ended at nearly 1a.m. both the nights., in our hotel rooms

A must visit when in Chaozhou. The wall and the city within is interesting. Lots of shops selling local stuff and shops selling food stuff and souvenirs. The arches on the street represent each person from the city that managed to pass their exams to join the imperial palace.
Walking towards the gate of the walk, you will come to the Hanjiang river where there is a nice boulevard to walk along the river. There is also a bridge to cross the river.

We did not walk too far on this as we had 4 kids with us and mother-in-law in wheelchair. But it was nice to stand up there to look around the place, including the bridge. This wall was also used to protect the city in the old days whenever flooding occured.

Really just a nice wall with some ancient gate that looks cool. The cool thing is the bridge opposite it. That is beautiful and has much historical story. Don't miss it if you're in the vicinity.
