Mutton, Donkey and Warm Tea
Dec 2020
I visited the Shazhou Night Market, Yangguan Middle Road, Dunhuang on the last night of 2020. The Market has two entrances on this road as well as exits to other streets. It was minus 15 centigrade and unsurprisingly, most of the stalls were closed. However, I can imagine it would be a bustling scene in warmer seasons.

I had a meal in a traditional 2-table café and for 100RMB had a delicious fare of roast mutton on skewers, donkey meat and vegetable-filled pastries (apologies to vegetarians and donkey breeders), broccoli in garlic and chili sauce, steamed rice and warm sweet tea. There were 10 food stalls open and all the food looked delicious.

I ate what seemed like a quarter of a sheep on another occasion.

Some gift shops were open and a few had better quality wooden sculptures … especially of the various representations of Guanyin, and loads of jewellery made of semi-precious stone. And of course camel ornaments.

Even if it was cold, it was a great place to eat and browse after sunset.

Most places are closed in Winter
Jan 2021 • Couples
We visited here in December. Most of the restaurants and stalls were closed. Most of the restaurants that were open didn’t look as good as ones you can find in other areas. However, we did find some nice raisins and bought some good sweet bread here. Prices are very cheap and you can haggle for souvenirs.

Eye Opening

This night market just couple of streets from the new Opera House in the city centre opens every evening right to the early hours in the morning. Delicious freshly made pancakes, fried meaty momos, lamp falafels, kebabs, spicy noodles, local desserts with dates, fresh fruits... makes you want to stay a few more days -so to try a few more dishes.

Memorable Night Market
Oct 2019
We enjoyed ourselves strolling this interesting night market with different types of things to see and food to eat; souvenirs, handicrafts, fruits, food, nuts, etc. Food vendors were very competitive. I cannot help forgetting the delicious lamb stick that we had, it was just sumptuous, grilled to perfection. The other dishes recommended to us were equally unique and good.
The seedless grape we bought from a senior woman in the market was very fresh and crunchy which we find it hard to come by during our trip to other cities.

A cultural experience. Great for an enjoyable evening walk, dining on local foods, and many interesting locally made souvenirs.

Night Market experience
Sep 2019
We picked up many treasures at the night market, and found an excellent place to eat just down an alleyway with many options. The secret is to stray from the main road and explore

A must see in Dunhuang
Jul 2019
The Shazou market is a must see for all visitors to Dunhuang. Although it is more popular at night, it is also an interesting place to walk in the day. We visited early in the afternoon before it was really busy, and enjoyed the less crowded area, as we were better able to view the shops and reliefs on the walls of a few buildings. There is free access to the market, and entrances from many side streets.

The market has four gates. The north section has two gates, the main entrance on Yangguan Middle Road and another smaller gate, a short walk to the right. The east gate seems to be the commercial entrance. A simple gate is at the southern entrance. In the center of the market is a courtyard area, which has benches for seating and a small stage used mainly for cultural performances. Many of the walls in this area had reliefs related to the Silk Road. The main restaurant area is in the northern section, whilst the most popular section was the nearby "food" street, which had many simple and reasonably priced f&b options. The streets surrounding the market, also had local food options. Our favourite was roasted duck.

The buzz of shoppers bargaining and the variety of shops makes this a great local experience. It is a great place to people watch and learn about the culture. The market is more popular at night and sometimes really crowded. I would suggest a stroll between 4-6pm when the stalls are still being set up. The mosque is at the south east end of the market, and makes for great photos with its' golden topped minarets. Other nearby attractions are the East main canal and the Playing Pipa statue.

Buzzing but a rip off
Jul 2019 • Couples
It is a nice place to wander people watch a feel the vibe and energy. However be warned that the food in the night market is a ripoff, not sure if this is only for westerners or for Chinese tourists as well as there were 2 different menus.
A beer was 25, this is 4-5 in the shops and 8 in the other restaurants we ate at.
The food was nothing special and many stalls sell the same, donkey meat is popular here.
Dried fruit was expensive compared with buying in the shops.
Personally I recommend taking a look around, but eat else where.

tourist trap
Jun 2019 • Family
After living in China for so long, I found this "meh". Glad we went, but it was really a tourist trap. The vendors would not negotiate, and all sold the same bad products. The lucky number in Dunhuang is 160, so the price for all items seemed to be 160RMB... a farce :) . The xinjiang food was expensive and poor quality (shaokao - 5-30RMB/stick; 1 lamb rib for 118RMB). Disappointment - better off skipping and going to a great xinjiang restaurant for dinner instead :)

Interesting mix of cultures.

We had a pleasant walk around this interesting Muslim and Chinese market which has a good variety of souvenirs as well as fruit and dried products. There are also many restaurants with extremely competitive prices.
