small but impressing
Sep 2018 • Friends
do not leave the mogao caves area without having a thorough visit to this museum, which is not big, but very impressing, and teasing you to continue and investigate the heritage of china silk road wonders

One of the most interesting museums that I've seen
Oct 2016 • Solo
Stroll the hallways of this museum and enjoy the artifacts, pictures of the archaeological digs done over the last 100 years, look at manuscripts that our ancestors wrote 1500 years ago, 1000 years ago and so on. There are manuscripts in Hebrew, Persian, Chinese and other languages that make this ancient silk road city so interesting.

Excellent context to Mogao Grottoes
May 2014 • Solo
The is is a small but interesting museum in the grounds of Mogao Grottoes, in the the rather-more-recent monastery built by Abbott Wang Yuanlu from the proceeds of his sale of manuscripts he discovered in the Library Cave (#17) of the Mogao grottoes. The history of this sale to European and American adventurers in the very early years of the 20th Century documents a loss to Chinese culture as profound as the Elgin marbles to Greece and is compelling background reading for a vist to Mogao Caves.

Excellent facsimiles of the ancient Buddhist sutras and other texts are on display, along with copies of paintings on silk and fragments of other work. It's another place where you see the fine work that has been done for years by the Dunhuang Academy. After a guided walk, where you will see cave #16 and the #17 library cave with it's statue of the seated monk Hongbian, this museum is a nice place for further context and reflection.

Another place where you hope the cultural material lost to a nation will be restored to them again.
