this place exceeded my expectations. Its located in a green compound, free to get in and everything is captioned in accurate and informative English. The politics is uptodate "common prosperity". Most items are old carved stones - which i like but you may not. I never saw the old boat someone else commented. Upstairs and the adjacent Islamic building are maintained in local style, refreshments / gift shop not available

We could not believe that a museum of such excellence required no entrance fees. It is an eye-opening tour including not only China's history of maritime engineering e.g. designing the flat-bottom boat which enables sailors and fishermen to access shallow waters.... but also showing the multi-religious and multi-cultural nature of ancient Quanzhou. There were rubbings and gravestones of Christians with the 'cross' but also distinct Persian and Chinese elements. Fascinating.

Besides the collection of model boats, this museum has a room with pointers to various excursions outside of town where remnants of external influences can be found. The second floor of the new adjacent building has an exhibit on moslem influences, while the third and fourth floors had a temporary exhibit of (interesting) paintings and sketches by a local artist.

Wonderful museum, with lots of excellent displays and information about the town, the maritime industry, and local history, including sone stellae, ceramics. The museum also covers the history of religions in the city. We visited the new building near east lake.

We were very lucky when we went and there was a volunteer English speaking guide on duty. She was excellent, explaining all the exhibits and bringing alive the history of Quanzhou which is the start of the silk road. Lots of interesting things on display in lovely modern, and spacious surroundings. Free entry . Well worth a visit .

I took a taxi from my Quanzhou hotel out to this museum this morning. Excellent museum, though the second floor was closed. The museum has excellent displays, also in English, and will give you an understanding of Quanzhou as an ancient prospering port town. From the museum you can walk to the Islamic Cemetery and to Shaolin Temple.

The visit to the Quanzhou Maritime Museum was an eye opener. The museum offers a wonderful glimpse of Quanzhou in its glorious past as the most important seafaring port of China, indeed the world. When everybody talks about China’s Belt and Road Initiative nowadays it is useful to know it is in Quanzhou, known as Ci Tong one thousand years ago, where the Maritime Silk Road started, and where Admiral Zheng He set sail with its huge fleet to the Western Seas. The exhibitions showcasing these expeditions, ship building industry, maritime trade, and everyday life very well done. Pity there were very few visitors. One exhibition hall featured the important Muslim influence through a reconstruction of ancient tomb stones and cemetery layout. One learns how tolerant China was of sundry religions and cultures in days past. Not to be missed by people interested in history and culture.

There are so many nice pieces in the exhibit. The main hall has the lower hull portion of an ancient ship raised from the seafloor just of the port of Quanzhou. Lots to learn from a small museum.

This is highly touted by many of the guidebooks. However... frankly, despite the modern, well-funded exhibit facilities, the museum just didn't quite capture the spirit of the maritime Silk Road. I'm glad I knew to visit the ancient (Song dynasty) ship at the Kaiyuan Temple), because that's really what you're probably interested in seeing instead of this museum.

The centerpiece of this museum is a 1000 year old Chinese sailing vessel discovered in 1974. The museum covers all aspects of early boat-building in China. It’s an appropriate setting given that Quanzhou Is the beginning point of the maritime Silk Road.
