- MissHK2009Hong Kong, China6,356 contributionsThere's a Chinese saying that one who is back from Huangshan Mountains would not go to see the 5 top famous mountains of China, that means, Huangshan surpasses all the mountains of China nad is the best of the best! Every entrance ticket is valid for 3 days and need one-day advance purchase. One may buy online, while my hotel at the mountains bottom near the South Gate (Atour hotel) has a counter and did all the bookings for ticket, connection bus and cable car for me. Hassles free. There are some kiosks or stalls in the mountains, so water, food, raincoat, plastic slip-preventive shoes cover and other hiking utilities at good price are all available in case you are not well prepared. Maybe most of the people try to finish the hiking within one day. But I strongly recommend to stay at least one night for watching sunset and sunrise which I did luckily. Cable car stops running after 4:30pm or one has to walk downhill for 2 hours or more.Visited February 2025Traveled soloWritten February 24, 2025
- Linda B11 contributionsReviews and pictures don't do Huangshan justice. It really is incredible (much better than Huashan), and we were lucky enough to have two stunning bluebird days (so no sea of clouds, but hey, I'm really not going to complain about having amazing weather). However, your visit can absolutely be ruined by crowds and obnoxious tour groups (why they feel the need to broadcast on loudspeakers, I don't know), so plan wisely. Go during the week, at the end of the season or in off season. We were there Friday-Saturday at the very end of November, and Friday was lovely but Saturday was an absolute mad house. Luckily since we stayed overnight we were able to still enjoy the morning before it got too crazy. We ended up walking all the way down the West Canyon and back up the other side, which was strenuous even for us as two fit hikers, but the way up was one of the most beautiful parts of the mountain and almost deserted. So if you can figure out logistics of getting to the back entrance and are used to hiking, then I highly recommend coming in that way rather than the main entrance. Now to hotels - don't pay any attention to the bad reviews. We stayed at the Xihai and it was super luxurious. The food was totally fine and reasonably priced for a buffet. The room was probably expensive for Chinese standards but not Western standards, and for heaven's sake, it's on top of a mountain! You're paying for the location more than anythingVisited November 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten December 1, 2024
- MM0980Leipzig, Germany662 contributionsUnfortunately, we had rainy weather. We set off for the hike in the hope that the weather would improve. The bus station is near the city - 1.5 km from our accommodation. The bus (19 RMB per person) takes us up. When we got to the top, we didn't see a ticket office at first. We had to go through a kind of small village and then we reached a ticket office where we could buy entrance tickets (95 RMB per person) and tickets for the cable car (80 RMB per person). We then went straight to the cable car - Yungu cable car. At 8:30 a.m. we were at the cable car - and at around 2 p.m. we were back in the city. Unfortunately, we didn't see anything - just fog. We went straight to the Beihai and Paiyun Hotel - West Canyon - with the small train (100 RMB per person) to Tian Hai station and then took the Yuping cable car (90 RMB per person/runs from 6:30 a.m. to 5:40 p.m.) into the city. We definitely have to visit the Yellow Mountains again when the weather is nice. But above all, we should be fit enough to climb stairs beforehand. We were only in the park for a short time - but the hiking trails only consist of stairs up and down. We had sore muscles for 3 days.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten June 2, 2024
- geo3Calgary, Canada2,448 contributionsWhy is this place not on more itineraries for China tours? It is stunning. The Chinese people certainly value it, judging by the number of Chinese tourists, but on the day I was there, there was only one other visibly non-Chinese tourist on the mountain. Of course, you do need reasonable weather (it rains a lot here), and we had perfect weather. I was with a tour run by Laurus travel out of Vancouver (very good tour company for China) and with a guide from Huangshan (William Hu - excellent and recommended). We took the gondola up (not sure which one - there are four from different starting points), then walked for the entire day on the top of the mountain. In the morning it was clear, which gave great views; in the afternoon some fog rolled in, which made everything mysterious. It was beautiful either way. The trails are in very good condition, although there is a lot of up-and-down. As long as a person doesn't have hip or knee problems, it should be doable by anyone in fair condition or better - you don't have to be a long-distance hiker, just do what you can. It will be worthwhile. There are eating places on the mountain. We ate at a place with a buffet lunch, which was fine. I think you could do this on your own, as there is quite a bit of English-language signage and good maps at intersection points. However, having a guide to sort out things like paying for the gondola tickets certainly makes things easier. Also, he knew the mountain intimately and could recommend routes to take. This requires a return visit sometime. The entire mountain covers a large area, with four gondolas to various points in the mountain. We covered less than half of it in one day, although we walked about 12 km.Visited October 2023Traveled soloWritten August 20, 2024
- Frieder DRadolfzell am Bodensee, Germany18 contributionsMystical, fairytale, breathtaking - no other mountain range should be able to appeal to the one who climbed Huangshan, Huangshan is enough! So it is written in guides and probably already in ancient writings. When I saw the ink drawings of Chinese painters as a child, I liked them because of their moods and wild landscapes. But I also thought: Why do they paint the mountains so exaggeratedly, so dramatically, so move the trees. Travel forms: They do it because the mountains and the trees here are just really like that! Huangshan is one of the most impressive mountain landscapes I have been allowed to see during my travels. Those who care about mountains should not leave China without having been here. The mass tourism development via countless concrete paths and several mountain railways may repulse the purist and creates almost absurd situations, for example of untrained city people who skip the mountain railway and can only move crawling after thousands and thousands of steps - but it is also a reflection of a philosophy that tries to make the extraordinary accessible to as many people as possible.Visited December 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten November 16, 2024

- xcschlrMilwaukee, Wisconsin986 contributionsWe spent an afternoon climbing up the mountain on a relatively clear day and witnessed many magnificent sceneries. On our trek downhill the next morning, however, it was rainy and foggy, so we had very limited views, even though some of the heavily fogged mountain images were still very pretty. Huangshan is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful mountains on earth. We may go back to experience more of its beauty in the future.Visited June 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten August 26, 2024

It's a small boutique hotel with rustic villas fully equipped with modern in room facilities like automated Japanese toilet seat and floor heating. It was was like staying in a serene and luxurious mountain village. The staff were very helpful and gave us good tips on what to do and where to hike. Highly recommended for a quiet retreat.Visited May 2024Traveled as a coupleWritten May 18, 2024

I spent two nights on Mt Huangshan (staying at the decent Shilin Hotel) and would recommend. Would also recommend avoiding busy holiday seasons and weekdays, as even mid-week in October the top of the mountain was rammed with tour groups.
I chose to walk up (the Eastern Steps) and down (Western) and did the West Sea Canyon on my day in between. It took me somewhat less time than advertised, with distances also shorter than advertised on the signs around the place, but all walks are strenuous as it's basically all stone steps. The scenery is spectacular though and it's worth the time and effort, and even the crowds!
Lotus Peak was especially busy - if you want to do that, go early. I was up there by 9.30am and still queued for about 40 minutes to reach the summit from just underneath it, and going down the queues ran well down the mountain.
Food on the mountain is passable but limited and pricey. There's no hot water for instant noodles (to deter people from bringing them) so self-heating meals are popular, although I believe these are also technically discouraged.
I got to Huangshan by train from Hangzhou; caught the onward bus from Huangshan North train station to Tangkou; and then, after leaving my bag in the bus station (15 RMB per day) another bus up to the mountain. It was all fairly straightforward but there is limited English signage.

This is worth making a trip to if you are in China and you can get most of the top of the mountain done in one day. Please note that the cable cars have rotating outages and maintenance November to January every year and it is quite a bit of a hike up/down. We went late December and went up the Yungu cable car and hiked to Yuping. The trail is about 9 km of walking and took us about 5 hours and then another 2 hours to hike down near Yuping. The cable cars take about 10 minutes to go up/down and cost 65 RMB one way. The ticket price was 150 RMB to enter the park. We would recommend staying in Tankou Town for a trip to the mountain buying your own snacks in town as regular items are two to three times the cost they are in town and the restaurant options are not too enticing. Bring a really good pair of shoes and a good windbreaker in the winter as there was quite a bit of snow, ice and cold wind at the top. There are lots of squirrels and monkeys around but we did not see a single monkey during our visit in December.

We visited Huangshan mountain during the Golden Week, when it get super crowded.
We started from the town of Hangkou.
If you happen to stay in the town of Tangkou, give local guide and driver Simon a call. We met him by coincidence. He used to be a guide and is now providing driver service, growing up in the area he took us to some very nice places nearby. And he speaks perfect English so a great help. He made some great recommendations about the best entrance to go up Huangshan in the busy days of the Golden Week. WeChat ID cjc5626316
We wanted to hike up the western steps but Simon advised us to take the lesser known North Entrance. This was indeed much more quiet, downside is that it was 1 hour drive from Tangkou, but certainly worth it. the walk up is beautiful, but be prepared: instead of hiking you find yourself walking stairs the whole way. From the north entrance it’s about 7-8 km to walk up, and the stairs get pretty steep and and some point we were quite done with it. But the views are good.
Once up on the mountain we stayed 2 nights at XiHai hotel, situated a bit towards the north. Still at the top it’s all steps up and down, don;t expect some good hiking trails to take you off the paved paths and stairs.
We tried to walk the West Sea Canyon route as we were told this is less crowded. But during Golden Week, everything simply gets crowded and the small steps and paths on this route were packed. Views again are great.
For sunrise and sunset, when it’s crowded, it actually pays to find a place that does not have a perfect view. We did a sunset at the start of West Sea Canyon, where you do not really see the sun set (it sets behind a mountain) but the colors are gorgeous and the setting is so serene compared to the hot spots where there are tons of people trying to take photo’s. We did the same for sunrise and had a nice experience this way, with more peace and quiet (if this is what you like of course. For the perfect picture you best go to a top)
We stayed 2 nights on the mountain, which was really more than enough time. We had some time to relax as well, but if you are pressed for time you can do 1 night.

I just spent 1.5 days in Huangshan City, so I seized this opportunity to pay a visit to Mt.Huangshan and an ancient water town - Hong Cun Village. To be honest, it is not enough to visit Mt. Huangshan but you can just enjoy the highlight of this magnificent place. We took Yungusi Cablecar up the mountain and Yuping Cablecar down, Locus Peak is the highest mountain, the steps are so steep that you should be caution when you climb up. The sceneries are so amazing , I lost my words for such a beautiful place. There are several hotels on the top of Mt. Huangshan, maybe is a good choice to stay for one night to enjoy the sunrise in the morning, but the price is not friendly.
It takes approximately 40 - 60 minutes from Mt. Huangshan to Hong Cun village, just a typical water town in China, half day will be enough. One of the most famous dish in Anhui is called stinky fish, be careful to taste it, I don't like it at all.

To get here you won't be able to get a train since it's near a small town and not a large city so you'll need to either get a 5 hour bus from Nanjing or a 2 hour bus from Hangzhou. There are plenty of hotels where you can spend the night because you'll need as much time as possible to explore the mountain because it's not just one mountain but a huge range of mountains that would take more than a day to explore so don't waste time. If you'd like you can walk up the mountain but it's much easier to grab a tourism bus up to the cable car, hopefully you don't have a fear of heights because you'll be on there for quite a while. On the bus and cable car ride the views are incredible but once you reach the top and can explore the different peaks, the views there are indescribable; while there are plenty of beautiful photos, they don't capture the scale. You can stand on several peaks, look out across several miles and see incredible cliffs and mountain tops. If you want to explore the full range you can sleep in a hostel on the mountain top but make sure you come here before everyone else because China is always packed and you'll have to wait hours if you dont come early.

The mountain is as they call it the sacred mountain of Huangshan city. The place is terrifically breathtaking and the nature is absolutely one of the best I have ever seen. Also, there are stairs in every stage of the mountain but it is really hard for youngers and elders. The whole trip should be taken in two days but I went there with a friend who encouraged me to do it in just one day. We got from the eastern side by the cable car and then moved to the top ascending. We started the trip at 7 am and ended at the end of the day in the evening on the western side of the mountain. The whole hiking experience was definitely worth, also try to get to know a local who can tell the legendary stories about the mountain. the transportation is reliable, there is a daily bus from the station in front of the train station. Bring with you plenty of water and supplies because it is kinda expensive at the mountain. Try to get a map and check the route and stairs and enjoy the hiking experience and nature.

We spent two nights at the top and one night down in Tunxi. The weather was different all 3 days. Day 1 mist and light rain; Day 2 freezing light rain with magical ice on the leaves; Day 3 sunshine. Hiking is good except can be slippy on ice so cheap slip on crampons/grips are sold everywhere and surprisingly useful in those conditions. Was very cold on Day 2. We stayed in Xihai Hotel - very good and great food considering the location as all ingredients and items are carried uphill by porter - so you see them everywhere on the hill. Some parts of the trail closed in deep winter but still good walking. 2 days is sufficient for a good hiker to see everything. There’s food and drink stalls at good locations and clean toilets some selling hot tea or basic coffee and chocolate/ snacks. You’ll never be more than an hour or so from a stop. Wasn’t too busy when we were there as weather was bad but it’s very accessible so can imagine it does get very busy at prime photo spots. Maps are everywhere but slightly confusing that slight differences in language mean you should check carefully. But it’s impossible to get lost.
Tunxi downtown. Definitely worth a night and a day looking around the old street with many interesting stalls and shops. We spent a whole day there seeing different things.

Went on a 1 day guided tour. This was during second half of Golden Week when weather deteriorated. On the plus side, no crowds. But also no views. Generally speaking, I would try to avoid any holidays or weekends for walking to the summit as some stairs are narrow, only allow one way traffic and can get pretty crowded. Despite limited to no views, a must do when in China and in Anhui province, a sacred mountain with otherwise great views and also some interesting birds to see.

After ascending the cable car we started our hike. Beautiful views emerged from the clouds. After reaching the hotel and leaving the heavier things behind, we went on an afternoon hike. Deep valleys with flowing clouds, a beautiful canyon. These mountains have an amazing climate. Tour organized by Alisa from Chinahighlihgts. I highly recommend.

The granite peaks with peculiar shapes, the characteristic species of Pinus hwangshanensis pine and the phenomenon of the sea of fog are unique here. An unforgettable experience, especially watching the sunrise. I highly recommend one day to walk the trails.

Travelling with a senior with some mobility issues. The cable cars sound great, but do you still have to walk on stairs to see most of the sites or can you see a lot just from taking the cable car? If we stay at a lodge on the mountain is sounds like we take a cable car up and then have to walk on many steps to get to any of the lodges? Is that correct? Is there a mountain lodge where you don't need more than maybe 20 steps up or down? I eliminated Zhangjiajie because it sounded inaccessible for her, but now I'm not so sure about Huangshan either?

By the way, I found it does help tremendously to have a local guide who speaks English well (unless you can speak Mandarin). They can sort through any ticketing effortlessly, and they know the transportation options. This area is not really set up for foreign tourists yet; on the day I was there, with a guide, I saw only one other visibly western person, among the thousands of tourists there. They do have English signage in many places, but it's much harder to figure out the system than in places like Shanghai, for example.

Hi! Im going to climb huangshan in august. I plan to take the bus from huangshan north station at 2pm to yungu temple. Does anyone happen to know where can i buy this bus ticket, or if it's available online?
Additionally, is it possible to walk from white goose ridge new station from 3.45pm, to beginning to believe peak, then reach dispelling cloud pavillion by 6pm?
Also, is it dangerous to walk from dispelling cloud pavilion to huangshan baiyun hotel after sunset?
Lastly, where can i get information on the last bus timings from yungu temple to huangshan north train station? And where can i buy these tickets from? I can't seem to find it online.
Thank you so much!!

Yellow mountains- I am overweight and like walking although I don't consider myself especially fit and had a hernia operation three months ago although I feel recovered. I need some candid advice about this visit. Is it something that I could attempt or is it far too crazy to do so given my circumstances? thank you

Does anyone know what is the requirement for foreigners entering the Yellow Mountain? I know everyone needs to make reservations on the app...but they all require local ID number. I have not left the country since last year and I have green code.
Written June 15, 2020
In this case, you can go to the ticket booth directly and show your green code and passport, and then you can purchase the tickets.

Hi, why are foreigners not allowed to enter the Yellow mountain? even though I am healthy, have a green code and all necessary documents, for some reason I can't go inside. This is blatant discrimination and goes against what your own government officials are saying ...
Written April 15, 2020
Today there is limitation of amount of people entering any site in China due to Covid-19. Normally in Huangshan there are 40000 visitors every day. Now the limit is 20000, why many people can not enter (already 8:00 am, quote is normally filled). I'm a foreigner living in China and never heard of specific discrimination of foreigners from any site. Actually I don't know, but I assume it's the limitation that is the problem! Tell me if you know something else!

I think you have to go on your own pace according to the weather circumstances and the people on the spot . If you can stay one or two days will be nice but you can do it in one day if you are fit and have no difficulties to go up and down .

We want to take the Yunggu Cable car to White Goose Ridge, walk to Beginning to Believe peak and Black Tiger Pine and to Beihai Hotel then toXiHai Hotel then to the Taiping Cable way and go down by cable car. Please advise on the steepness and difficulty of path this way. We are middle aged and have knee pain problems. Wondering if there will be a lot of ascent and descent or quite a flat walk this route? Our research online tells us need roughly 2 hrs and not far to walk in terms of km, but don’t know how about the climbing. Is it a lot of steep steps? We are doing this latter part of November. Any advice from people who had gone by this are will help. Thank you in advance!

Hi , we just finished climbing 2 weeks ago . Suggest you stay 1 night at Xihai , it will need 2.5 hrs to walk from Yungu to Xihai , there are quite a steps up and down , bring walking pole . It will be good to take a hiking guide as they can guide u so that don’t waste time walking wrongly and avoid crowd as many tourists groups with loudspeaker . They can tailor to your fitness. The queue at Yungu is very long in the morning so it might waste 2 hrs or more as autumn is peak season . So if u don’t stay up in the mountain , u need to go down and come up the next day as you cannot complete the walk. Hope it helps
