About
This Museum, located three blocks north of the San Pedro de Atacama Main Square, displays “The Memory of our Solar System” narrated by the authentic characters which participated on its formation: “The Meteorites”. Here, you will know, touch and feel the magnetism of legitimate sidereal rocks, from the “planetary embryos” –first solidified bodies in the nebula of dust and gas which originated our Solar System- up to evolved fragments of planetoids. Also, you will be brought back to the beginning of life through a group of meteorites carrying complex organic components, such as the nitrogenous basis of DNA, spreading as seeds of life all over the Cosmos. Finishing in the sensorial area, a personalized guidance service will give you the chance to touch these marvels with magnets, teaching you, in a practical manner, how to distinguish them from the terrestrial rocks, and turning you into a meteorites hunter. guide audio in: Deutsch, English, Español, Français and Portuguê

Small but well worth the visit
Privately owned and run by professionals. A pair of brothers who have collected a wonderful collection of meteorites. They are connected with international organizations. Well explained exhibits with audio explanations in several languages.

Very nice experience! Recommend to all interested in science!
A very nice experience at the Museo del Meteorito! The exhibits are informative and nicely presented, offering an insight into meteorites. It was to have the opportunity to touch real meteorite specimens. I highly recommend a visit to the Museo del Meteorito to anyone with even a passing interest in space or science, it’s a very fast visit but it is an enriching experience!

Over 6,000 meteor pieces of every size and shape have been collected
The museum housed in 2 huge lit globes has a collection of over 6,000 meteor pieces of every size and shape. This is the painstaking work of two local brothers who for over 40 years have collected these pieces from the Atacama Desert. They are lovingly displayed here with apt descriptions and some history. It is a remarkable place that has received worldwide acclamation. Nominal fee but get the audio guide narrated by one of the principals. Here you get to visualize, listen to, touch and even feel these amazing meteors that have been through the galaxy to land right within your grasp.

This is a little gem which, although small, is effective. The display, in a geodesic dome, comprises a circle of displayed meterorites of different types and histories. A screen by each exhibit gives a video display and headphones have a commentary in a choice of languages. In the centre are cabinets with arm-holes enabling visitors to feel various meteorites, check their magnetism and feel the weight of those light enough.
The Atacama is an ideal place for finding meteorites because there are ares with no vegetation or disturbance and the very low humidity prevents oxidation and erosion.
Staff were friendly and knowledgeable.
It is possible to buy various small examples found locally.

We visited this museum because we had an hour to kill before we left for our flights.
We found it absolutely fascinating! We listened to the audio tour( available in different languages) and learnt so much about meteorites, their role in forming the planet, and in our evolution. This took 25 minutes. Then one of the guides came over and took us to a display case where we could touch meteorites, see the difference between terrestrial rock and extraterrestrial rock by placing magnets on them - the high lead content of meteorites attracts the magnet. I was blown away to see iron in rock with the same compound as the iron in my blood. My husband said that looking at one particular meteorite that contained components of DNA found in humans - was like looking at his ancestors! We stayed for an hour we were so engrossed.
Don’t miss this museum - it’s astonishing. It would also be great for families.

A short walk from the center of town, this tiny space would be of interest to meteorites enthusiasts, but for the rest of us, all these explanations are a bit hard to understand. Some of the exhibits are nice... and so is the expensive jewelry for sale at the entrance! Never waste a chance to make a few extra dollars.
I saw the real museum of San Pedro 45 years ago and was looking forward to visit it again. I was quite disappointed to learn that it was closed for renovation.

The museum itself is very nice, but if you want an experience for life, book the astrological tour! Steve, the Belgium guide, will first take you around the museum while telling in the most interesting and enthousiast way as possible about meteorites, space, earth, stars, and how these all interact. Afterwards, you will go outside to watch the stars and planets and other curiosities from space. I saw Jupiter and its moons and the rings of saturn. These two hours were probably the stretch of time in which the density of learning new things was the highest in my life. Why the experience is life-long? In the two months after the tour, I have never looked at the night-sky without repeating what I have learned; that red - non twinkling - "star" is Mars (or one of the many other things that came by on this unforgetable night).
