Where in the world do you find 6000 m high mountains with no snow? The lack of snow at these high altitudes make the Atacama desert a unique place. The trip to Salar de Tara provides wonderful views of the altiplano with its many volcanoes and majestic Andes mountains. Enormous sculptures created by the forces of nature all presented in... Many parts of this trip. Here is one, the Duna Mayor. After tres Marias, this is the final item on the “to do” list. It was the perfect thing to do to punctuate the day, watch the sunset. Here you walk about 20 minutes to the top of the ridge, (the dune), climb about 400 meters high and find a... More

Visiting Salar de Tara requires a guide with a 4WD vehicle. As soon as you veer off the main road in the direction of Salar de Tara, you understand why. There are no roads (not even dirt roads) for a large part of the way - you simply drive through vast stretches of desert. There is a wide variety of... More

We went with Cosmo Andino to Salar de Tara. On our way we saw landscape change from altitude 3 times. It was incredible. Also, you can see Laguna Verde and Blanco in Bolivia. We stopped at various points to take pictures of rock formations as well as lagoons. All the funny volcanic rock formations in the coldera were really awesome.... More

A great day, perfect in every way. Francisco was funny, smart, and spoke excellent English. He treated us as intelligent travelers, not tourists. The driver Ivan was excellent, artfully steering the vehicle over difficult terrain. Landscape was breathtaking and both Francisco and Ivan were knowledgeable and informative. Mid-day lunch was excellent, a hot meal with chicken, rice, vegetables, bread, cookies... More

On this trip, you are going to hit the highest point 4820 m on the international highway towards Argentina. It is a long drive. You get to see lots of volcanic rocks of strange shapes and really bright colors. You also get to see a salt lake. But there was no flamingoes in winter. In the summer, I was told... More

This is a tour that is sometimes disconsidered, but it is worth it. It offers a kind of a mix of the landscapes of other tours, but since Atacama desert is beatiful, it is worth it. If you are travelling for just very few days, then you can focus on the other ones

LOVED Salar de Tara. Only downside - 8+ hours with no bathrooms. Tour operators will stop occasionally at rock formations so everyone can go outside and relieve themselves. If you are comfortable doing that, I would absolutely recommend Salar de Tara. Have a feeling of truly being in the middle of nowhere. The contrasts - 30+ minutes in desolation followed... More

We were a group of 6 and wanted to go to Salar de Tara and Valle de la Luna in 1 day. The best, and yes - the most expensive, option is to hire a guide with a 4x4 jeep just for our group. This was our 3rd full day around San Pedro de Atacama and we got great deals... More
