Reception a bit cold at the agency but they are very serious. We were received by a Spanish speaking astronomer which is obviously passionate about his work. We took the time to see the sky with naked eye and receive explanations about the basis of astronomy. There are several different telescopes, which he calibrated manually to allow us to see different celestial bodies. They move quite fast so you have to be quick.
We had a debrief session with a hot chocolate. Overall, a very instructive and friendly activity. The SPACE observatory is self-funded so please support and book with them :-)

The skies are a MUST SEE outside San Pedro de Atacama and SPACE is the only tour that takes you to a private property with 9 telescopes. The first part of the tour is an explanation of the sky and we loved the exuberance and knowledge of our guide. You then are showed the telescopes focused on different sights and have time to take your own photos. The guide as well as the 2 additional telescope operators kept things focused as the sky moves and were helpful in taking pictures as well.
Seeing the Milky Way was such a treat for this city girl!
Dress warm, but honestly it was warmer at 12midnight here than at 8am at altitude!

Airport Calama, law cost flights from Satiago, taxi to San Pedro de Atacama, plenty of cheap hostels, restaurants, unforgettable tours to Lagunas di Antiplantes, Laguna Sojar, astronomic tours, geysiers...... MUST to explore and enjoy. People are nice, food is good, tours and guides are well organized. San Pedro is small, dusty and modest and most beautiful place to visit.

We weren't informed about the cancellation due to bad weather by the tour organizers even though they were informed that we were waiting for them at the meeting point which was quite remote in San Pedro.
All in all very disappointing and the only really bad experience we had in about 4 weeks of traveling in Argentina and Chile.

A Night Sky tour is a must in San Pedro de Atacama - don't leave this region without doing one of these remarkable tours. The Atacama Desert is one of the best places in the world to star gaze - high altitude and a dry climate in a remote location with very little light pollution. I did a Night Sky tour with Space Orbs (aka San Pedro de Atacama Celestial Exploration) office located at Caracoles 166 and it was amazing! We were picked up in town by large buses, splitting the group into Spanish and English speaking, and driven out into the Atacama Desert (about 30 min drive) to the observation area. The tour was approximately 2 hours, the first hour was an informative introduction to the night sky of the southern hemisphere, given outside identifying different stars and planets. The second hour was dedicated to looking through the many telescopes on site (must be at least 15) all different types and sizes - that are set to view specific parts of the sky (outlined by the guides). You are then given time to view the sky through each of these telescopes. It was an incredible experience - one I will never forget! Loved it!

While you can drive or take a taxi to this site about seven or so miles outside of town, a shuttle bus is provided as part of your price of admission. You just have to be at the right corner to be picked up and driven out. Save yourself the hassle of wondering if you've gone the right way and let them get you there.
Because it gets cold once the sun sets, wearing layers -- as recommended -- and having things like gloves and hats is definitely helpful. It will get brisk/cold. The less you focus on that, the better you'll be able to focus on the fascinating astrological information your guide will share with you, using laser pointer so that you don't miss a thing.
The enthusiasm of our guide for his material was only surpassed by the 10 amazing telescopes set up -- and aimed at different celestial bodies for us to view -- in the yard of the facility. We saw stars that form constellations. We saw Jupiter and one of its moons. We saw shooting stars. We saw the Southern Cross. We saw STARS and we had fun while we gazed at and studied them.
And then we went inside to a warming "hut" (actually a room with seats in a semi-circle) where we could converse and joy hot chocolate while we waited for a bus ride back to town.
A friend had recommended this tour to me. Because of its altitude and location, San Pedro de Atacama is ideally situated for this activity -- one of the best places in the world. If you'll be there, set aside time for this special excursion.

We thoroughly enjoyed our night-time astronomical tour with Celestial Explorations. The English-speaking guide gave an excellent introduction, carefully pitched while communicating a real enthusiasm for astronomy, and then enabled the group to view a number of different planets and constellations through the outdoor telescopes. The trip was just the right length. A must for any visitor to the Atacama.

We visited in June 2016 as part of a school field trip. The guide was excellent and gave both kids and adults a good introduction to astronomy. The first hour of the tour was an introduction to astronomy using the naked eye and the last hour used telescopes to see the planets and various stars of intrest closer. The tour finished with a question and answer session and a hot drink. Our guide was a native English speaker, though I believe tours are avaialbe in various languages. Make sure to bring plenty of warm clothes though, as it was quite cold by the end of the tour.
