I had heard that you will need 4-wheel drive to get up the road to the Embalse, but that was not true. The roady is bumpy but serviceable. When I arrived there were a long line of cars parked along the road and it took quite a while just to walk to the entrance (which is free). Then there is another long walk alongside and above the hydro-electric project being built at the outlet of the Embalse. Although it is ugly, it is also rather interesting to inspect from an engineering standpoint. After perhaps 30 minutes one arrives at the actual Embalse, a beautiful turquoise reservoir amid stark tree-less mountains. When I was there in early November there was still quite a bit of snow on the peaks, which was beautiful. One can now walk along this reservoir and enjoy the views. The path is level and wide enough for a vehicle. Unfortunately, there were a few motor bikes zipping by. Another hour brings one basically to the end of the Embalse but the road continues until a deep value that branches northeast from Cajon del Maipo. I understand there is some good camping farther along but I didn't go there. All in all, I would recommend a visit. I visited on Feb 6 2019 with my own car and my kid. The place around the embalse El Yeso is not safe due to geological risks. I strongly not recommend under any circumstances to visit the place. Highly risk of a avalanche of stones in many places.

Beautiful place located 2 hours from Santiago. I visit it twice last summer and didn't regret! Make sure you get there as early as possible to avoid the crowd. If you are going during winter make sure the roads are open. Good drivers required for this trip.

Visited 17th Sept 2019 Rented a car from Santiago and drove here, the drive is quite challenging as the road close to the attraction is narrow and close to the edge of the cliff. We went on a sunny and clear day, and had to park the car and walk about 4km. Lovely view and was well worth the effort! …

It’s a large water reservoir, up the mountains, made of spring water. The trip from Santiago to it is not really pleasant, but it worth it. The place is calm and full of peace, the water body is gorgeous, surrounded by mountains. Great for walking around, photographing, and a picnic. …
