What an awesome hike! A friend and I hiked to the San Francisco Glacier in November and were able to snap some amazing photographs. If you're into hiking, it's definitely worth renting a car and driving from Santiago to do.

To get to the trailhead, its a 90 minute or so drive from Santiago, with the last 30 minutes on gravel road. The hike is fairly easy with a moderate climb at the beginning followed by a long, gradual slope to the glacier. Its 6-8km hike, then return the way you came. Very pretty scenery and relatively quiet if you go early in the morning. By the time we returned (early afternoon), there were a lot of people heading in. Worth a visit if you're looking to get in a nice hike.

We drove up the Camino Al Volcan to start this well marked trail in the Monumento Natural El Morado. The 8 km hike (16 km round trip) was steep at the start and very uneven at the end, but the bulk of the hike was a moderate grade and very easy.

The lagoon is 6 km up the trail and a good stopping point to turn around if you want to miss the uneven trail.

The entire hike was gorgeous and the trail nearly empty on the day that we went (started at 0930 am).

In January and February, one bus daily goes to Banos Morales. It leaves from the city and stops anywhere on the road and drops you at the beginning of the hike. It took us 5 hours return (including lunch break). It starts with a steep climb, but after the first 3 km, it is gently going up in the valley. Beautiful scenery and colors. The return bus is at 18:00 and a return ticket costs $8000. It is best to buy a return ticket, so you are sure to have a place on the returning bus. You can't start the hike after 1pm.

It is a wonderful trip to this Glacier. It starts just outside the town uphill to the right, over a small river up the hill to the guides hut. After being charged double the price of local one begins the walk. The first part is steep, narrow and slowed by the packs of backpackers slowly trekking their backpacks up a mountain that cannot be camped on. The next section is a beautiful valley hiding behind small groups of professional walkers in active wear carrying walking sticks with flicking them abandon (watch ones eyes). 3/4 along is a small lake surrounded by crying kids and screaming moms. Further along it is little quieter, the place where the Glacier was is spectacular! When one realises just how warm the planet has become sad. It’s a pity that those who should see a destroyed monument are unable to make the trek.

The walk in a less populated part of nature was nice. The track is rough and will not suite everyone. Slow walkers should start early.

Departed at 12:30 returned at 4 pm.

Two years ago we hike El Morado national monument and this year to acclimate before Atacama we hike "El Colgante" in valle de animas.
It's a relatively long drive from San Alfonso to the far end of the road but after the hike is nice and the view on the "hanging" glacier worth every effort...
You begin at 2600 m to arrive at 3200 m..
Unfortunateky the arrival odf bad weather shortened our stop here but we'll be back for sure

This is probably the best day hike close to Santiago. Its an easy hike up a beautiful glacier valley. The valley is surrounded by snow covered peaks, and ends at the San Francisco glacier. There is nice mountain lake 2/3 of the way up, which is ideal for a break. Check with CONAF for opening times and other info.

The hike to the top of the valley to see the glaciers is about 6 kilometers the first three of which are steep. But when you reach the top the valley opens up and you can see the three or four glaciers that are called San Francisco. They have all receded quite a bit but the scene before you is beholding. There are no trees here. Almost alpine but it was hot in feb when we did the hike for 8 Kms Each way. Definitely worth the effort. Check times when park opens and closes. There are bathrooms. The gravel road to the entrance is very rough. Cold beers await you at the finish chilled in the flowing waters from the glacier.
