Few cities have the proximity to nature that Santiago does. Even fewer have national parks on this magnitude accessible via public transit. Well, semi-public transit. From Bellavista de la Flórida, follow the signs in the station that say "Intermodal" and find the #72 bus going to Baños Morales. It's with a company called Tur Maipo. Get there early. It leaves at 7:00am! The bus costs around CL$3,000 to CL$4,000 each way. (I give a range because two of our group mysteriously got a discount, but no ticket.)
The bus takes about three hours to go through the neighborhood of Puente Alto to San José del Maipo for a snack and bathroom break before continuing up to the entrance of the national park. This last bit takes about 45 minutes and is very bumpy.
The bus lets everybody off, says what time they're coming back. It was 6pm for us, but it doesn't hurt to double-check. They also sell tickets for the return trip, which again is CL$3,000 to CL$4,000. There are a few shops to buy water or snacks before your ascent. The only thing left is to pay CL$1,500 for the entrance and you're set. Overall, it takes 3 hours up and two hours down depending on your speed. While it is snowy at the top, I wouldn't recommend anything more than a windbreaker as it's not that cold. But do bring lots of sunscreen and water for obvious reasons. Overall, the entire cost is around CL$12,000 depending on how you choose to get to Bellavista de la Flórida early in the morning.

Located among the "Cajon del Maipo" attractions, you will need to go trekking for about ~16 km to get there. The difficulty level is something between medium and hard. It is a nice experience since it is very rough environment. The trail begins in the "Baños Morales", a place where you can go bath in the natural waters. We rented a car and could easily get there with the help of the app Waze (search for Banos Morales). Attention: Be there before 13:00, after that it is not allowed to enter the trail anymore. Once you are in, you have to be back by 18:00. Ideally, get there by 11:00 and you will have enough time. (for that leave Santiago by 9:00)

This place is worth your visit! We stayed in Santiago and left early for our drive to Cajon Del Maipo.
Please note we drove in a KIA cerrato rental car which would be the worst car to go in, if you can get a 4x4 . You will get unpaved roads before getting to the entrance of this national park.
Will cost 2000 pesos rouglhy $4 canadian dollars. You need to get here before 1 pm to have entry to the park and you need to exist the park by 6 pm.
You will see swallows, condors, parrots, gecko's, Horses... etc etc. you will see lagoons, and drink from glacier waters. the trek is long and sooooo worth your time.
and we spent almost 1 hour speaking to the park rangers once we returned from our hike to talk about Condors and the wildlife these people have passion! such an awesome experience and I wish you take the time to come here!

There are two common routes to access the El Morado National Monument Park, one access through the Quebrada Morales valley and starts near community were the Baño Morales hostel is located. This place is very close to the Camino al Vulcan road, and is the one you have pay a pass to get in. You leave the car there at the community and start the trekking right there. This trekking stars at 1840 m and goes up to 2500 near the lake and the San Franscisco Glacier viewpoint. It is considered an 5-6 hours, easy to medium hike.
The other trail is located on the following valley, on the next exit to the left. This is the one you leave the car next to the mining company gate (or, if you have a SUV or truck, you can go up about 3,5 km deep on the Las arenas Valley). This trekking start much higher (2450 m - near the mining gate) and go to (3120 m - at the hanging glacier lake) and gets much colder. Depending on your condition or adaption (due to the altitude) it can be a strenuous hike, 4 hours round trip if you are fit, and around 7 if not.

El Morado is a great day trip from Santiago and it provides endless exploring, hiking and views. The photos can never do justice to the beauty of this place. Recently work has begun on a hydro electric project which has changed the landscape of the initial entrance into the Natural Monument area. Once you move beyond it however, you quickly forget man's impact on the area. This is a must do if you are in the area.

We took the bus that leaves at the Vicente Valdes station next to Petrobras at 8:30
From the the centre You need take the subway to Vicente Valdez. Then you need walk until gasoline station calls Petrobras and there is gonna be the bus. (We had a small mini bus). The Bus/company name is "turismo montana". You can make a reservation in advance. It costs 10.000 pesos per person for a return ticket. The bus drops you off at Banos Morales from where you can start the walk. The bus goes back at 18:00.
The walk is nice and easy (not spectacular). But it makes a fun day trip. Walk is about 3 hours and 2 hours back.

Getting here is half the fun, thru the spectacular Maipo valley. As you get to Banos Morales, you leave the main road and take this dirt road that is very steep both on the way down and up the other side, and also in a very rough state, so caution is advised here. Park near the entrance of the park, walk to the guard house, pay the fee, sign in and start walking. It is approximately an 8 km walk to get to the Laguna Morales, with the first 2 km fairly steep. Took us 3 hours to get to the laguna, 2 hours to come down. The general scenery is majestic, with the El Morado snowy peak as a backdrop. The laguna itself was not as grandiose as the pictures you see (at least in April), where it was more like a regular pond with no turquoise color to it. A fun day accessible to most people.

In order to get to the park it is recommended to go with your own vehicle since the buses only reach the town Baños Morales during the weekends on the high season.
I went on April, so the bus took me up to San Gabriel, and from there I had to hitch-hike. Good think is, even though there aren't many cars going that way, there are lots of trucks and they will pick you up for sure.
Once in the park, the view is quite nice. You walk uphill the whole way (8km), but it's not that hard, until you reach the glacier.
Depending on when you go, the glacier will be "clean" and surrounded by snow, or covered with dirt and rocks. On the way you will find a nice lagoon, and some horses.
The entrance fee for foreingers is 5000clp.

If you want to really get a feel for the Andes and are staying in Santiago this is definately the place to go. It is a couple of hours outside Santiago (the last 45 minutes or so on an unmade but relatively smooth road). There is a bus on Saturday mornings in the Summer months which goes to Banos Morales just outside the entrance to the park. The park itself is run by the national park authority (forestry corporation) and therefore has a clearly marked trail (which is unusual in the area). The trail climbs steadily along a river valley with beautiful scenery and it is relatively green (again unusual in the area). Eventually you get to a small and beautiful lake with a snow capped mountain behind it. A great place to stop and enjoy the view. A bit further on you get to the snout of the glaciar itself which is very much receding. The total distance from the park entrance to the glaciar is about 8km I think. The ascent is probably about 700m although I cannot remember exactly. You have to pay a small entrance fee to get in.

The common problems for those who unable to make it.
1. The tour agency and the guide normally dont inform us well about how important to arrive early.
2. Some tourist always come late. We have to wait.
3. The tour agency or the guide dont take off on time. sometime waiting for other tourist, sometime they themselve come late.
4. The tour guide sometimes.. only after picking us.. they will stop at petrol station and stop at the restaurant.. so, this waste more time.
5. They will rush us to finish the trekking.. Then they will rush back home.. sometimes they will stop for dinner on the way.
6. Many people complained to me. I advise the tour agency to be more responsible.
It is their duty to make sure we reach the place. They must inform all tourist to be on time. they must reach the park before 10am in order for everyone to walk and rest and reach the place with happiness. Not rushing us. It is our hard working money we pay to go there. Not half way return home. Not for the breakfast or lunch or dinner. But for the place we like to visit.
7. The agency and the guide normally take sweet time to go. But rush us back home. They know the places well. They know sometimes it closed. They simple dont inform us. later they take us to other places. Plan B. this is bad news for tourist as we pay and we lost the money. The tour agency and the guide always make the money. not fair. Please tour agency and guides. Help us.. be sincere to us. make sure.. you help us to get there.. dont go late and rush us early. thanks.

Hola Martin y a todos, podrian decirme si en enero se puede visualizar nieve y si se puede ver realmente el glaciar? deseo ir la proxima semana, pero no tengo ropa de trekking, sera que podre alquilarla ahi mismo ¡ y cuantas horas lleva llegar al glaciar y luego regresar al punto de salida? porque quiero ver ese dia si puedo hacer otra excursion por ej embalse de yeso, agradecere su ayuda,saludos.

The problem is the tour agency reached at the park at about 11am. So, those who are not very active in trekking will find hard to reach the lagoon it self. Please avoid during June to End August. The park security may deny entrance due to heavy snow. It was a wasted money spend. I really hope the tour agency will inform the tour to go early in order to reach the lagoon in time.

Este 16 de Marzo vamos a estar en chile y quisieramos saber algunas cosas antes de visitar el cajon, no tenemos auto, bici, nada... Nos explicaron como llegar hasta la plaza desde el centro de Santiago, pero nos gustaria ir al Morado, entre otros lugares, como se hace para recorrer los lugares? Hay algun tipo de transporte pago o algo por el estilo? Agradecemos su respuesta
