The exterior of this moderate Cathedral is currently in the midst of having its exterior restored, Even with that happening, we loved stopping here on a Sunday to take a quick look of the interior. It is not over-the-top like many European Cathedrals but is more simple, yet beautiful. It features many gorgeous stained glass windows.
BOTTOM LINE: This church is easy to find because it is located directly across the street from the main city plaza, Plaza de Armas. The construction began on this church in 1844 and dedicated twelve years later. The massive front doors are amazing. The Cathedral is named after San Bartolome who is the patron saint of La Serena. MY RATING: 8/10

If you are into South American cathedrals, this church has an interesting interior design. It is long and has many pillars. You may be disappointed if you expect the more ornate European cathedral experience. Visit the various side sections. Take a moment to meditate here.

I liked the architecture of the Catedral. It was less luxurious than other cathedrals that I have seen in Santiago.
I liked the typical colourful windows and the stone-based structure
The outer and side views of it were also charming.

Find Plaza de Armas and you cannot miss the Cathedral which is for my viewing the dominant feature about the Plaza. I gather the current structure occupies the location of the earlier 'mother church ' built by the Francisco de Aguirre order in 1549. It is the first Cathedral I have visited which was at one time the recipient of an attack and destruction by pirates -- none other than one of the number of pirates who operated in this area, being Bartholomew Sharp. Inside you will find a three aisle layout with huge stone columns and a wooden ceiling. Stained glass windows line the sides of the interior. Well worth a visit to this National Monument.

The interior ornamentation are beautiful if somewhat ornate. It is a place of serenity and peace and a good place to ponder and relax.

While we spent less than 10 minutes here, it was well worth the time spent after we browsed the nearby market. It was lovely and helped us understand a little more about life and the people here in La Serena -- the very reason why we love to travel.

nice clean and simple church. Nothing too special, but worth a look if you are passing by. It is worth a short 10 minute stop.

La Serena is famous for having loads of churches. This is the central cathedral, but it is nothing special...a few arches, some pictures of saints and a couple of crosses. If you particularly like churches then visit it, but it will be 10 minutes of your life that you'll never get back.

What a gorgeous building the La Serena Cathedral is and it is located right in the heart of the township.
