I'll be honest, I wasn't that interested in the feats of President Videla beyond him beating every other head of state to visit Antarctica. I was more interested in the ordinary items from 1950's Chile. I had fun comparing them to items from the same era that my grandmother owns. I particularly enjoyed what looked like an early, home-made version... More

I wasn't expecting much and sometimes that makes a difference. This was the residence of Presidente Gonzalez Videla and is furnished with many items from the mid 20th century. There are lots of news articles which explain what happened in Chile under his administration. There were also other rooms with even older artifacts from La Serena's early days centuries ago.... Interesting and informative museum including genuine artifacts. This is a nice tribute to a president who loved his hometown. The museum also features a variety of international articles which help any visitor to make a connection. When I was there, there was also a wonderful temporary exhibit on regional legends. Definitely worth a stop!

This former home of a Chilean president also houses a large and diverse art collection, as well as a display of Videla's personal effects, including a parka used when the president visited Antarctica during Chile's claim of a wedge of Antarctic territory. Its location on the Plaza de Armas makes it a must-visit on your trip to La Serena.
