Although this is downtown, this part of La Serena is not the part where most of the action is happening. This is a quiet park that has a few vendors. It does have some banks surrounding it. This is not the typical plaza de armas that you would see in other cities.

This plaza is the centre of La Serena and is notable for the many nude Greek statues and known locally as "Park of the Bare Behinds". Otherwise nothing of significance to see here.

We took a nice stroll thru this beautiful city plaza. In the center of the plaza is quite a nice fountain and pool with several statues. We were here on a Sunday and it was very quiet considering the unrest the area around it has experienced over the past few months with governmental protests. You can see splattered protest paint on most of the civic buildings, statues, banks and businesses around the square. Very said to see.

BOTTOM LINE: I the plaza we say families enjoying time together. Some local vendors were selling items there also. The plaza is directly across from the La Serena Cathedral. Overall the square was nicely landscaped and was quietly patrolled by police officers. We thought is was very nice city park. MY RATING: 8/10.

It was a simple palaza which is the place for many events. While I was there it was close to national fiestas 18 sep. and there were many music and dance groups playing and dancing there. Around there were traditional markets which mostly sell accessories and food like empanadas. There were plenty of dogs around sunbathing around the central beautiful fountain with sculpture.

When travelling in South America, always go to the Plaza de Armas in every town you visit. They seem to be the hub of every community. The Plaza de Armas in La Serena is no different. We visited on our first night and there was a bolero and tango concert stating at 9pm. It was fabulous with both musicians and dancing. I would have tangoed too but I had my walking boots on... The following night, there was a pupoet show. The stalls around the Plaza had really interesting handicrafts and souvenirs and there was no problem finding something to eat, if not the snacks in the plaza, there are restaurants nearby. Also the people are really friendly and helpful.

La Serena lays claim to being the second oldest city in Chile. This small and neat park has seating and shade, statuary and a fountain that was undergoing restoration when we were there. Bordering the park are the Cathedral, main pedestrian mall with shops, and some impressive buildings noted for their different styles of architecture from over the years. The building that stands out is the City Courthouse.

La Serena, Chili is a very old quaint city founded in 1544. The town square and the Plaza De Armas areas of the city seem to be the center attraction with the local market, places to eat and of course many shops. We had an enjoyable day taking in the local culture. The people were friendly and the weather was great!

In the main square there was a lot of vendors set up around the perimeter offering all different types of things. We ended up just getting some ice cream and checking out all the different things that people were selling. It had a great feel to it and was bustling with activity. The square is also very close to many other larger stores if that suits your fancy. Easy way to spend half a day wandering.

By contrast with Santiago, which has little historical charm, the centre of La Serena is very appealing. Stroll around the Plaza de Armas and neighbouring streets and you will feel like you are somewhere interesting! A festival was in full swing while we were in La Serena, resulting in vendors lining all sides of the square. I don't know if that happens often, but it brought desirable life to the centre of the city.

The main plaza in La Serena is quite pleasant and nicely landscaped. On the Sunday we visited we were pleasantly surprised to find a grandstand set up with a parade dedicated to all the brave fire fighters of the Coquimbo region. Sunday mornings are very quiet in La Serena but everything started to open up and come alive shortly after noon.
