Ancient church from a 100 years ago, made of wood in a natural color. The most impressive of its architecture is the ceiling. Nice to visit if you are in the area. Located in Achao, a small island 10 minutes away from Chiloe, you have to take a ferry.

As part of a cruise excursion on our way to Antarctica, my wife & I visited some of the 16 fascinating, 19th-century, wooden churches on Chiloe Island on Tuesday 12/23. Together these churches constitute a UNESCO World Heritage site that is well worth your time. This particular church has a most unusual ceiling, plus other lovely interior details.

From Dalcahue, around 12 Km northern Castro, you can cross on a ferry boat to Quinchao, the second largest island in the archipelago of Chiloé. When arriving in Achao you can visit a viewpoint in the highest part of town from where you can enjoy grand views of the town, islands nearby and mountains. The church Santa María de Loreto,... Although very ordinary looking from the outside, the interior is a pleasant surprise. Located on the Island of Quinchao, which can be reached by ferry from Dalcahue. Note: Although the hours of operation are posted in the church window, the day I visited, it was closed for most of the afternoon, only to re-open a few minutes before closing time.

The church was under construction for a major renovation, and almost completely obscured by tall fencing. However we could see the top half of the structure and most of the bell tower. What is interesting is that this and most other structures and houses are built of wood, whereas in Northern Chile, Peru and Ecuador all is stone, adobe or... More

This is the oldest church in the region and is actually on the island of Quinchao which is a short 10 minute ferry ride from the main island. If you have a car it's a good place to aim for because it gets you onto another island and via the drive allows you to see many different things. (museums, lagoons,... More

Achao is a really tiny village, in a secondary island on Chiloe's Archipelago, the Church - the oldest of the wood Churches of the region - is a piece of art - an amazing job in wood architecture - worth for the visit - the rural views on the way are very beautiful as well.
