I think some of these reviews might be for the northern section of the park that is hard to get to. You drive to Chepu in the north and take a boat across the Chepu river. We did not cross the river so didn't see this.
Farther south you can turn off of Hwy 5 onto Hwy W-80 toward Cucao. There is a parking lot and a Ranger Station past Cucao where a small fee is collected. We hiked every trail we could find, using their map, and weren't particularly impressed. This was however one of the best places we visited on the island. Although we enjoyed experiencing Chiloe, it is not a place that we would recommend as a vacation destination.
We drove and did everything ourselves. Perhaps we should have hired a guide to help us get to more remote locations on the island. FYI, the people that we came across, mainly in restaurants, at gas stations, on the ferry, etc. were unbelievably friendly and pleasant in spite of our very rudimentary knowledge of Spanish. We came away with a very, very positive opinion of the average Chilean that you interact with this way. We hope to return to Chile after the coronavirus situation is resolved. We had to cut our trip short this time.

The hike to "Muelle de los Almas" left me positively surprised!
We were lucky and went with sunshine, so there were great views of woodlands, the ocean, hills and cliffs. Really beautyful!
The hike is easy for people in normal physical condition, suitable for children, yet not for people with walking difficulties or very old age.
The Muelle offers beautuful views and does for great pictures.
Only con: You have to wait in line to take a picture there, so all the nice pictures with someone in a lonely wild landscape away from civilisation are rather fake ;-) We did a nice picnic instead of waiting in line for a photo.
Great family excursion!

At the park entrance you arrive on a two-way scenic road on which you have to drive slowly considering the crossing of Pudu and other wild animals. I also found the park open on Christmas Day and it was a wonderful experience given that no one was there. The marked paths are easy to follow, some shorter, some a little longer, but in any case all well marked and you can't get lost. To go to the dunes you have to cross the road and pay attention to passing cars and then continue towards the dunes and/or beach. I found the route to the dunes bumpy but in the end I managed to get there but you can easily get lost, the one to the beach is different. the map can be downloaded like all the maps of Chile's national parks on the Conaf website which manages it masterfully. The miradors are spectacular. Entrance fee around 7 thousand pesos, they also accept credit cards.

Although it's a ways from other main spots on Chiloe, the national park is certainly worth a visit. We were there in about 70 minutes from our spot in southern Castro.
Numerous walks/hikes of various lengths and accessibility offer something for everyone. Unique flora and fauna make this park a good draw.
Guides were welcoming, spoke some English, and started us off nicely...

Chepu best place in Chiloe
I am currently travelling around the world and I have been staying for about three months on the Island of Chiloe, Chile, I would be glad to share with you the recent information I have in my possessions about places, activities and accommodation.
INTRODUCTION ABOUT CHEPU
Apart from the most visited places in the North part of the Island, (Pinguinera of PUNIHUIL and National Park of Chiloe of CUCAO), I have been charmed by the small locality of CHEPU (230 inhabitants). This place is little known and visited by a small amount of tourists. It is surrounded by a great variety of landscapes made of beaches, rivers and wetlands, place of reproduction of a great species of birds.
To me, the major attraction of CHEPU is the VALLEY OF DEAD TREES. During the tsunami of 1960, a giant wave entered the rivers and left in the middle of the Laguna thousand of dead trees that are still present today. It offers a unique fantastic landscape.
WHERE TO GET INFORMATIONS IN CHEPU ? From 2006, a center of information , THE MIRADOR DE CHEPU, has been opened on the site. It is a private initiative of Fernando Claude y Amory Uslar who want to promote responsible tourism in the area and give the visitors information about fauna, flora, activities, lodging, Senderos de Chile...
The MIRADOR DE CHEPU offers a panoramic point of observation on the wetlands and the Dead Tree Valley, and a welcoming cafeteria.
In order to get closer to the Valley of Dead Trees, the Mirador rent KAYAKS (1500 pesos - 3 USD per hour). The equipment is brand new, and the site is perfectly secure (the river is very calm in the area).
TREKKING
Chepu is also the point of departure of two very nice TREKKING PATHS created by the SENDEROS DE CHILE (association created by the Chilean Government)

PATH CHEPU – NORTH PART OF THE CHILOE NATIONAL PARK
DURATION : 6 hours at a slow pace
DIFFICULTY : low (December to March)
This path starts with the crossing of the Chepu River. Local boats are available from the local people at the Anguay Bridge (10000 Pesos). Once on the other side of the river, the path follows the beach and the coast. After 12 Kms (4 hours at a slow pace), one arrives in AHUENCO, in this place, it is possible to visit a wild Pinguinera (where one can observe Humboldt and Magellan’s penguins), which is accessible by feet when the tide is low. If one keeps on walking on the Tongoy Beach (6 Kms, 2 hours at a slow pace), one reaches the North entrance of the Chiloe National Park. From there, it is possible to visit a beautiful native forest. At this date, it is not possible to walk further or to access the South part of the National Park (Cucao). It is necessary to go back to Chepu.
PATH CHEPU – DUHATAO
DURATION : 6 hours at a slow pace (13 Kms)
DIFFICULTY : medium (December to March)
The path starts at the Aulin beach, located at 5 Kms of the Anguay bridge of Chepu. From there, the trail passes trough dunes and the beach. A the end of the beach, the path enters the native forest (wide variety of fauna and flora) during 7 Kms. At the end of the forest, one arrives in Ahuenco, a perfect place to swim and camp. From there, at 12 kms is located the Pinguinera of Punihuil.
WHERE TO STAY IN CHEPU ?
Agroturismo
Rural accommodation
Camping
Thanks again and I truly recommend this place

Well, the park can easily be reached from Castro; take a bus from Municipal Terminal Bus Station (MTBS) which leaves you exactly at the main entrance of the park (same location for return), 3500CLP/person both ways.
It’s a lovely bus ride which gives you the opportunity to see how locals live( majority on the bus are locals as well).
Entrance 4000 CLP foreigner and 2000CLP local or foreigner with Chilean residence.
You’ll get a park map at the entrance. The park is ok, we walked the whole park in 2 hours (app 6 km of trekking).
In rest, unfortunately nothing spectacular.

The park is very accessible and easy to explore - however, guided by Macarena, Cyril's very knowledgable and friendly wife, we had a day that was perfectly paced and included Chonchi, Castro's mercado, a local lunch stop and Cucao, putting it all in context. Highly recommend ChiloeNatural and Macarena.
The park is so peaceful and serene with extraordinary flora. In this late summer heat, not much fauna, but cool breezes in the shade and all in all a wonderful investment in getting to know Chiloe, its history and extraordinary topography. Macarena offers Chilean hospitality at its best - easy, informative and thoroughly helpful in English! Recommended highly!

We arrived to the entrance of the Chiloe National Park next to Cucao in our full hiking gear, where we found out that there are only 3 trails of a length of up to a couple of kilometers each (very family friendly; the difficulty level allows you to bring both your grandmother and your two-years-old along). Even combining all the trails we were done after only a bit more than two hours. Although this was rather disappointing and we felt a bit ridiculous in our gear (you could easily do it in flipflops), we found the trails quite interesting as we learned about local flora and fauna, spotting birds and strolling through different types of Chilotan natural forests and wetlands.
We later found out that the part of the national park where the visitors centre and the trails are located is not even connected to the main part of the Park - so don't expect to encounter too many wild animals apart from birds there.

Scenic drive to the Park along Lake Huillinco and the best part of the walk in the National Park was the El Tepual loop with temperate rain forest plants. Also across the road was the track to the Dune lookout from where you had a good view of the pacific ocean. There was also access to the beach.

We enjoyed our drive from Castro out to the National Park. I would describe the trip as pleasant and interesting but not fabulous or particularly memorable. The walks were well signposted and easy to follow.
