Although the beach is very large, it's never too crowded. It's usually very quiet and calm, also because the beach hascin fact the shape of a horseshoe, which prevents the waves from becoming too strong, you could say La Herradura resembles a pool. There's enough commerce around the beach to never get hungry or bored. For those reasons the beach is a pleasant place for any kind of person, whether you like to swim or read a book by the beach.

There are so many beaches along this part of the Chilean Coast one never knows where one stops, the other begins. Located slightly south or the 'other side' of Coquimbo La Herradura ( remember the 'H' in Spanish as with French is silent) Beach has the advantage of being shaped somewhat akin to a U or a horseshoe, thereby avoiding much of the rougher surf you will find along the 15 Km stretch form Coquimbo to La Serena. During summer this entire stretch is very popular with Chilean's and they flock here from Santiago and elsewhere. For the beach vendors it makes for a busy season as they walk back and forth throughout the day shouting out their specific item(s) for sale. If visiting from out of town bring a beach umbrella or rent one as the sun can burn you here.

We did a slow drive by on a Coquimbo/La Serena tour we took with South Excursions. The destruction from the recent tsunami was sad to see, but our knowledgeable guide Felipe filled us in on the extensive early warning system Chile has for tsunamis. Despite all the destruction there was very little loss of life.

He also amazed us with stories of beach front condos going for 40k. This might be a great place to retire!

I had the chance to visit Chile many times, but now I have the chance to visit Chile in the summer, I love it, because I visited the Coquimbo beach, La Herradura, and I had a wonderful time, best time to visit, december or march, less local tourists.

Get here to walk and be a local.
Try the Churros (fired dough). And enjoy.
It does get crowded January-February. Empty the rest of the year.

We stopped at the Mirador De La Herradura (a lookout) where we had views of Horseshoe Bay and the local beach “Playa La Herradura”. Great views towards the city centre. There were some statues on the beach – one was a guy in a boat (named “Martin”) looking out to sea and the other was a bizarre looking man called “Hombre Ingles”.

Included in our tour, this is a very nice beach area with lovely views across the bay. Although it was a warm sunny day, there were very few beachgoers. We were informed of the damage caused by a tsunami, the warning system installed, property costs and much more. Some graffiti evident but nowhere near as extensive as in other cities visited. However, the beach was not nice enough to convert me to a leach lover.

We only stopped for a short time but the beach looked nice and well kept. It was cool that day so only a small number of beach-goers were around
