Battambang is a town in the north west of Cambodia which is home to a myriad of sacred ancient Buddhist temples.. All built in the Therevadan traditional school, their architectures and surrounding gardens are a place of contemplative retreat.. Saffron swathed monks, of all ages mill around the deep water wells bathing, monkeys shriek loudly in the towering writhing fig trees overhead... Every morning in groups of over twenty, the monks saunter off out into the streets , crossing over bridges and punts across the grand river towards the thronging markets on their daily alms begging routine... That in itself is a marvel to witness... Battambang is a curious blend of colonial days and a living breathing re- enactment of the long gone heyday when Buddhism was the dominent essence of life in Asia.

Battambang has a number of historic wats and they largely survived damage during the Khmer Rogue regime. This makes this city's historic city wats the best preserved in the country.

The best of Battambang's wats (in our opinion) is the interesting White Elephant Pagoda, not far from the city museum. It has a very attractive outer porch, with its eaves supported by some kind of angel or winged mythological creature. Built just over a century ago when Thailand ruled this part of Cambodia, it shows some Thai influence.

We visited at Khmer New Year, during which time the temple grounds become a centre for festivities. The youngsters even had some kind of dance party going in one corner of the yard. It would make a photogenic inclusion for a walking tour at any time of year, however.

Spent a short time to visit Whit Elephant Pagoda which is located behind the provincial museum of Battambang where the pagoda is truly amazing and beautiful. Here is so calm in personality, at the right entrance there is Preah Sihanouk Raja Buddhist University, Battambang Branch which publicly open for local university students and teachers.
Just close the courtyard of Pagoda there is a provincial museum that is available for tourists to explore the impressive statues, mythology and Buddhism, running with ancient cave information, before you begin your journey to visit ruins temples in Battambang provinces. Highly recommend!!!!

One of beautiful pagoda in town and it is very detailed decoration of Buddha history and huge elephant status at gate. There are many Buddhist monks live inside pagoda and to talk with them.

A very quiet and and peaceful spot to stop in and relax.

Be sure to notice the pagoda outside and monuments in the surrounding cemetery.

We stopped at this pagoda during bike tour and thought is was very lovely. Some very cool statues and designs all over the grounds as well as neat flowers. There are also some very fancy shrines around the grounds.

Had a great city tour guide that explained to me the meaning of the various different statues in the grounds.
Temple was locked but entrance to the grounds is free.

I was walking around Battambang in the heat and walked into the White Elephant Pagoda and just and watched the activities occurring there.

The pagoda itself is a beautiful space with the white elephants at its entrance.

But the activities with the Buddhist monks was fascinating. Watching an English class occur full of saffron robed monks, monks washing and cleaning, just their day to day activity.

It was so serene and shows how materialistic we have become and yet never seem to be happy as we have to accumulate objects.

Wander around this pagoda and like many others enjoy the peace and serenity.

There are an entertaining series of sculptures in the forecourt of this temple. They were all created in the mid 19th C. There's a couple of White Elephants, a chariot pulled by a couple of horses and my personal favourite a poor dead fellow being pecked by birds.
Monks in the grounds will happily chat to you, the temple rarely sees any visitors, It is right in the centre of town between Road 2 & 3 and it's free admission.
