This was rare opportunity to climb up the pagoda where most pagodas forbid visitors to climb up top. At the top, I saw Shwemawdaw Paya & Mya Tha Lyaung Reclining Buddha in the background. When going down, it was even more tough compared going up due to the steepness of the steps! However, I feel rewarded after visiting this pagoda by appreciating the view of Bago city.

Like most Pagodas in Myanmar, this too is a lovely Pagoda, full of history. Its good to take a Guide or Guide book if you want the correct history of this place as Language is a problem in Myanmar.

This was built by the King Ba Yin Naung. The distinctive of this pagoda is participating
ladders that's men can go to the upper part (the middle of pagoda) where we can see
over view of the whole Bago city. There is a small portrait of this pagoda and ancient
pagoda which look like the pagoda in Bagan nearby the palms as in the middle of Myanmar within the conpound.

This pagoda is massive. The pagoda was neglected for many centuries and it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1930. The current pagoda was restored last century. Restoration was really poor. The floors are very dirty. The gilded ornaments are ordinary. At the time we visited last year, it was again under restoration and it was not possible to climb it.
There is a little, Bagan style miniature Ananda old temple close by. It is interesting to see it.

One special thing about this stupa is it's colour. The upper part is white, which isn't common. The other thing is that you can climb stairs to go almost to the top, but only if you are a man. I know :-(. I did that and the stairs are very steep, but the view up there is very cool, because you can see over the city and surrounding forrests.

The pagoda is unique in architecture and design. Though men can go to the high upper part of the pagoda, it was not allowed during the rainy season. There is also an ancient pagoda, which looks like those in Bagan, within the compound. You can also feed pigeons there.

There are many, many temples, pagodas and stupas to see in Mayanmar. This one is different in its design. Very impressive.

like most sites in Bago, also this one is impressive in size, but poor in artistic value. walk once around the stupa and try to find anything worth your attention... I didn't find anything, beside the mere size of it.

Though only a replica of the original, this Pagoda has the distinctive quality of being square in design, with steep stairwells allowing those with no fear of heights to climb up the side of the stupa all the way nearly up to the top, where magnificent views across Bago await (surprisingly green and lush from this vantage). There was a sign indicating ladies are not allowed to climb up, but whether this is serious and is anything religiously motivated, I don't know. There was no one to check, in any case.

I visited the Mahazedi Pagoda early in the morning (around 9 am) just after we arrived from Yangon by local bus. We were nearly the only ones except for some monks and nons. The pagoda is not that beautiful, but the view from the top is just stunning. You can see golden pagodas everywhere around you! Because we were here that early, my girlfriend also enjoyed the view (there was no sign yet it's forbidden to women to go up the stairs).
And the best: it is even a sight you can visit without buying the 10K Bago foreigner-rip-off-ticket!
