In Veliko Tarnovo there is no 'Historical Museum' as such, but an umbrella Organisation called 'Regional Museum of History Veliko Tarnovo'. This encompasses eight different museums, one Multimedia Center, one Ethnographic Complex (Osenarska Reka), one Archaeological Reserve (Nicopolis ad Istrum), two Architectural Reserves (Tsarevets and Trapesitza) and eight churches (four of them in neighbouring Arbanasi). Of the eight museums only four are directly related to history: Archaeological Museum, Museum of Bulgarian Revival and Assembly Hall, Museum of Modern and Contemporary History, Prison Museum. The Museum of Bulgarian Revival and Assembly Hall as well as the Museum of Prison deal mainly with the period of Bulgaria's struggle of Liberation from the Ottoman Empire in the 19th century up to 1978. The Museum of Modern and Contemporary History is dedicated to the times in Veliko Tarnovo after the Independence had been won, especially also about the Balkan Wars and the First World War. Thus plenty of weapons of these years to be seen here. For all the museums and sites an entrance fee of at least 6 Leva is requested, thus the 'Two-Days Combined Ticket for 10 Museums' is recommended.

The museum is in the center of Veliko old town in the second Bulgarian kingdom's parliament. It has 3 levels. I definitely loved the museum, more for what it is not listed in the guide. At the bottom level you can find about the old guilds from Bulgaria (copper tools, iron making, commerce and gold processing), the architectural of building from Veliko and icons. The second level is about the Bulgarian liberation and you can see many artefacts from the russian-turkish war and to understand the bonding between Bulgaria and Russia. The third level is about the second Bulgarian kingdom parliament and also there are some items belonging to the Bulgarian kings.
