Nice to spend a few hours, lovely views
It was fun exploring the grounds and taking in the views. It was really hot when we went and luckily you can get refreshments inside, I remember an ice cream stand and I imagine they sold water. There's also a decently-sized souvenir section and place where you can take a photo as some kind of monarch Anyway, definitely worth taking a look! Apparently there's a light show as well which would have been fun to see.

Lovely fortress and a fun day out
Lovely site to explore. Weather was quite hot when we went however really enjoyed exploring the site for a few hours. I would recommend taking plenty water / juice with you if you are going to visit although there is a vending machine near the top of the Fortress with some shelter if you have coins with you. The views you get from around the fortress are spectacular however you definitely need to watch your step. There are a few areas where there are broken planks and rotted boards.

    Must go for history lovers
Must visit for history lovers. Unfortunately, too many museum pieces left outside to rot, like the ottoman tombs and other ruins. Definetely needs investments, but this is more of a complaint to the officials. They do 50% for students so keep that in mind.

Worth the climb to visit the Church
It was very hot when we visited Tsaravets Fortress/Hill, crowned by the remains of the Castle once occupied by Bulgarian Kings and the church at the very top At times I questioned climbing to the top in the searing heat! The uneven cobblestones underfoot made the trek to the top o much harder. but the views made it seem all worthwhile, so the motivation to get to the top kept coming! The Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascentian of God is built on the site of a historic church and is not actually a consecrated. The building and the frescoes were completed in 1985. I would describe them as "different" - it was very strange, but good to research it after the visit and learn more about it. A lot still happening on the site.

    Pride of Veliko Tarnovo
The great pride of Veliko Tarnovo and the whole of Bulgaria is Tsarevets. Rich history and national pride. Located on the hill of the same name in Veliki Trnovo. On this occasion, we would like to thank the tourist guide Nikol Ivanova, who explained everything to us with a lot of knowledge and guided us around the fortress.

Fortress on top of the hill
What a nice fort is obviously a partial reproduction of one that was on the location, they’ve been slowly rebuilding it from what it was before it was destroyed I the 1300s. At the top of the hill is there church just below? That is the remains of what was a palace. There was also a church there, but not much is left and there’s large amounts of defensive balls all over the top of the mountain. It’s beautiful and a wonderful place to have a picnic , the cost is 10 lira

Not so important for foreign tourists
Knowing the high ratings of this attraction, we were a bit disappointed by what we saw there. The fortress is probably of a great meaning for Bulgarian people, but it is not so attractive for foreign tourists. Nevertheless, we were walking around about an hour.

Feel the moments at the capital of Second Bulgarian Empire
You don't have to be only a history buff to love this place. It has extraordinary natural topography around, built on a strategic place and bringing you back to the 13th and 14th century, so you can imagine how it looked there. Churches, fortification and great views.

this is one of the must-visit sites for every Bulgarian and foreigner to visit. the place is really beautiful and the most important is that the real battles were fought here during the invasion of a second Bulgarian kingdom. you can really feel the magic of the object

I visited Tsaravets Fortress located in Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria. A historical fortress with a lot of history. Most of the fortress was destroyed, but there is a map showing what it used to look like. There is a monastery at the top of the fortress and they have light shows at the fortress as well. The city of Veliko Tarnovo is a charming and beautiful place. The people living and working there are very friendly and to my surprise all that I came across speak English. If you travel to Bulgaria I definitely recommend that you visit Veliko Tarnovo and check out the Tsaravets Fortress.

A bit challenging if it's 30+ degrees outside, but quite enjoyable in more moderate weather. See the views and the uniquely painted church and take the elevator to go to the top of the tower.
The only reason why this isn't a 5 star review is that the refreshment points inside Tsarevets aren't that well organized - it's interesting to experience quenching thirst and the first seller you see to only sell ice cream but no beverages, so you keep on climbing with the hope that there will be some water somewhere further up

We were here as part of a group tour in August 2022 and so had a guide with us. There was hardly any queue to buy a ticket and go into the fortress. The ground is uneven so that’s something to bear in mind. The museum in the former church at the top is worth the trip to see the grey paintwork - very unique and modern to what you would see elsewhere.

This is a spectacular fortress in the beautiful scenic town of Veliko Turnovo. Set above the winding river valley below it dominates the town and there are great views from it all around. It's good to go early in the morning during the summer months to beat the heat and the crowds although to be fair even while we were there in August it wasn't too busy.

Great fortress straddling the entire hill. Good value for money (6 BNG entrance fee) with a vast area to walk around in. Extensively restored sections, including the main building (church) atop of the hill (interesting ‘contemporary’ decorations). Other parts are untouched. This stark division between parts makes for a bit of a vague overall impression.

While visiting Bucharest, Romania, we couldn't resist a quick day-trip to Tsarevets Fortress. It is a medieval stronghold located high on a hill in Veliko Tarnovo in northern Bulgaria. The partially reconstructed fortress complex is very impressive. The fortress was once the headquarters of the Bulgarian military forces and was later the royal palace. Walking the grounds and learning of the history was very moving. The Museum Church, at the top of the hill, was also very interesting. It interior is decorated in an adaptation of the original Frescos common in Bulgarian churches. Only these dark macabre Frescos were created in 1985, while Bulgaria was under Communist rule. We enjoyed our time at Tsarevets Fortress and only wish we had longer to explore the grounds. The view of the city of Veliko Tarnovo and the valley below the fortress were equally impressive.

Easy walk from the centre of town. 10 lev entrance. It is an interesting walk around the ruins, good footwear recommended as some of the paths are quite rough. The reconstructed church tower at the top has visually modernistic and dramatic paintings inside.
Highlight of the visit is undoubtedly the stunning views all around..... so many photo opportunities.
