Disgusting looking grotesque illustrations. I don't know who painted them but the things he painted and the way he painted them are disgusting. The whole atmosphere in this place (this is not a church) is unpleasant to say the least. And the curators of Tsarevets accept it?
When we tried to tell the woman standing at the reception at the entrance, she got angry and said that she was not interested and nothing depended on her. Apparently a lot of people have said the same thing.
If you write that this is a church, let it be so. Otherwise it looks like a crypt. And you can't see anything that glorifies God, not something that glorifies Bulgaria, but only a depressing situation.

the pictures inside remind of a church but it is not one-from the outside you get the impression that it is a church but once you step inside you will be surprised

A must if in Veliko Tărnovo. The paintings are specific, the church has not been reconsecrated as they do not follow the norms of the Orthodox Church.

While this monument is built on the site of a historic church, it is not actually a functioning church. The building and the frescoes were completed in 1985. The monument, and it's beautiful and dramatic modernist frescoes are well worth the visit!

Weird to see post modern art inside the building. Doesn’t feel like it’s a dedication to God. More like an art exhibit.

The cathedral is situated on the highest top of Tsarevets fortress and was re-built during the 1980s. The interior of the cathedral is very different than other churches in Bulgaria. Its very detailed paintings beautifully depict the history of the fortress and are inspiring.

There is no cost to enter the cathedral, but if you don't want to climb to the top you can take an elevator to the top of the church tower. The elevator is located on the opposite side of the cathedral entrance.

From the top you can view Veliko Tarnovo 360, it's breathtaking.

Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension of God is located on top of the hill where Tsarevets Fortress is. In accordance with the historical sources, the Cathedral was built in the late years of 11th century and beginning of 12th century. It was part of a complex or ensemble of buildings serving the purposes of Patriarchy. The Cathedral was reconstructed during the 7th and 8th decade of the last century and it is believed that not many of original elements were kept. Nowadays the Cathedral has nice decorations on exterior and interior as well. The interior is decorated with nice frescoes depicting important moments of the medieval Bulgarian history.
You may take the elevator to visit the last level and the terrace of the tower located in the vicinity of the Cathedral. Young student from the local University is making the guide job, offering interesting information about the complex. At the end of August were a lot of wasps there, so we didn’t stay for long time due to obvious reasons!
