The area
Neighborhood: Pinheiros
Exploring Pinheiros, a neighborhood known for cozy restaurants and cafes, you will notice a youthful energy. Several cultural centers and institutes surround the area and even its main church, Calvário, hosts a traditional Brazilian “Festa Junina” - a celebration with traditional music, dance, and food during the months of June and July. On the weekends, residents gather at Benedito Calixto Square, a loud and crowded area where people enjoy live music drinks alongside the antiquities fair.

Jardins is a very nice neighborhood to go. Rua Oscar Freire is packed with amazing stores. The best part of it is between R. da Consolacao and Av. Augusta.
The side streets are also very nice. Al.Lorena is 1 block up from R. Oscar Freire. There are nice stores, bookstores ( I think one is called Livraria da Vila, it is gorgeous ) and there is a bakery called Docemania that sells amazing cakes ( they sell by the slice for a great snack ) and Italian gelattos from Offele.
R. da Consolacao has trendy clothes stores, and at night it is a big gay spot.
R. Haddock Lobo has very fancy stores like Tiffany & Co, Christophle... At this street there is a restaurant called Arabia, which is the best middle eastern restaurant from Brazil! Across the street is Pao de Queijo, the famous brazilian cheese bread.
There are plenty of nice places to eat, nice stores to shop and nice people to see in Jardins....

I am from NYC and I enjoy walking to places so Jardins was the best place for me. You can easily walk to Paulista and take the train anywhere in SP avoiding traffic that is a major problem in the city. Jardins has a lot of great restaurants and you are not too far from Ibirapuera park which is the Brazilian version of Central Park.I would hightly recomment Jardins.

This area is quite busy with many pedestrians I think at all hours of the day. We usually started our day around 9am-10am. We were walking distance to the subway and to a main street, Paulista. We strolled along this street several times. Our first venture out was to the Shopping Cidade Sao Paolo. If you are staying in this neighborhood, I highly recommend that you do your money exchange here on the lower level of the mall. You will get the best rate at MoneyGram there or you can use the ATM to withdraw cash, but you will be charge $8.00 from the machine. The value you get ends up being about the same, whichever option you choose. Out hotel did not do money exchange, so don't expect that your hotel will. The airport has bank machines once you pass immigration and inspection and really right upon exiting the airport. Those machines charge $8.00 as well.
Oh...use UBER!!! We didn't think of using Uber until way later. We paid $50USD for a taxi from the airport to our hotel. On the way back to the airport, we used UBER and it was half the price.
Jardins area is quite safe. Just use your common sense. Like any other busy city with some poverty, there will be beggars and opportunists around. So hold your purse tightly and if you have a backpack, wear it to your front.
I liked this area because there was a lot of activity, including artisans and musicians, to professionals and some stragglers trying to make a dollar out of fifteen cents.
On Sunday Paulista Street was closed to cars. Most people were biking, running or doing some sort of fitness activity. There also seemed to be a protest on one end of the street and a party with band on the other.
I don't speak Portuguese, but respectfully tried as often as possible.
I loved Sao Paolo and can see myself visiting again. Check out Liberdade on Sunday for the awesome food vendors and the upbeat neighbourhood. You can take the subway!
Also check out MASP, one of the most popular museum in Sao Paolo. You should also see Beco do Batman for some diverse graffiti and then take a short walk to CoffeeLab for the best coffee and serving hospitality. Another must do is the Municipal Market in the Sao Bento area. It was tricky to find, but with some patience you will be so happy to experience this. Try lots of fruit for free, but be careful, it is easy to get ripped off here as a tourist. Eat a mortadello sandwich and a pastel!
There are so many great things for you to discover in Sao Paolo! This is by far one of the best trips I have taken in my life.

Jardins is an attractive, safe mixed residential-business neighborhood. Referred to as the Beverly Hills of Sao Paulo it is rich with luxury and high end shops, restaurants, bars, and high end apartment buildings and residences. Definitely worth a visit.

It's worth your time to throw away your fear of walking in Sao Paulo (many Americans are scared to do so, due to the horror stories in the news) and stroll through Jardins neighborhood. It's beautiful, with leafy trees, and lovely storefronts, restaurants, and parks.
If you are aware of your surroundings, and are not an Ugly American, this is a wonderful way to get some exericse, enjoy the surroundings, hear some Portuguese (the most beautiful language in the world) and maybe discover something new. Otimo!

That's the place to stay. Everything you'll need is walking distance. There are plenty of restaurants for all the budgets and "padarias" for your breakfast.
There are design hotels and affordable chain hotels as well.
The area is very well serviced in terms of transportation.
Avoid the malls and shop on the streets. Its much more fun.

Jardins area is definitely a must for visitors because it's one of the few neighborhoods you can explore walking, as in an European city. The neighborhood is into the square formed by Paulista ave., Rebouças ave., Estados Unidos st. and Brigadeiro Luís Antonio (commonly referred to as simply Brigadeiro) st., but the trendy, lively area is the "left half" that ends on 9 de Julho st. You'll find good window-shopping on Oscar Freire st. (between Melo Alves and Augusta sts.) and some of the finest restaurants in town. Best way to arrive by public transportation is to hop off at Consolação metrô station and follow Haddock Lobo or Augusta down towards Oscar Freire. On the other hand, while it's a pleasurable stroll, these shops and restaurants can be found in most big cities worldwide, so if you stick to Jardins and don't explore the rest of the city you won't be able to savour a truly local experience.

Saludos.

Hello,
My husband and I are thinking to travel here for a short vacation (about a week). We see the prices of hotels are quite good right now in Jardins. You mention that safety is not a concern. Can you elaborate on that? Were you back in the hotel before dark? Do you speak the local language? We speak English and a couple of other foreign languages, but literally zero Portuguese. How taking the local transit? We took a public bus and the subway in Santiago, Chile with no problems. What do you say about Sao Paolo? Help!
Thanks

It is safe. Probably safer than Vancouver.
Sao PaUlo is an amazing city and Jardins is beautiful and a very entertaining area. It is full of restaurants and places to visit.
Public transport is also very safe, cheap and easy to use, there is no need to speak Portuguese, but It may be useful to learn the basics.

Hello
I was thinking of visiting the Mercado first when I arrive then taking a taxi over to the Jardins. Do you recommend this? Thank you.
Steph

Take a taxi from Mercado to Jardins will cost you a lot, especially if there is traffic, which is most likely there will be! I suggest that you use the metro from Mercado (metro station Sao Bento) to Paulista Avenue (metro station Trianon-Masp).

Na região do Jóquei Club não tem hotéis, minha sugestão e reservar em algum hotel de rede mais econômica tipo Íbis, Fórmula 1 e contratar o transporte, de modo que todos vão e voltem juntos.
