Neighborhood: Sé
Sé, which derives its name from Sé Square, is a central neighborhood in historic São Paulo. Close by, the Law School, the Museum of the Court of Justice and the Metropolitan Cathedral offer inspiring architecture. If you are looking for cultural activities, head to Caixa Cultural and check the schedule. In the area there is a popular pedestrian street called “Rua Direita”, one of the first streets in the region, which today marks the crowded perimeter. Sé is a great area to explore during daytime, but use caution if visiting alone at night.

Beautiful architectural building to visit. We had a 1 hour guided tour with Lucas ( in Portuguese )
The Theatre was build by São Paulo City Council with money from the coffee farmers. Looks like the young brother of Palais Garnier in Paris.
It has a cafe and buffet restaurant, and from 19:00 a newly build bar ( Bar dos Arcos) in the basement of the Theatre.

Available on Wednesday and Saturday only at 11am & 3pm, free English guided tours of the Municipal Theatre. Tours last approx 1 hour, depending on how many questions you have. Lucas was our guide and he was excellent, extremely informative of the building and the history. The building itself was built in 1911 and is beautiful. Recommended!

We arrived just five minutes before 11 am and were accommodated with a free English guide - all groups seem to have their own guide. They not only play opera but also modern music like soon Clockwork orange from Stanley Kubrick. It usually costs US$12-40 for a seat but sometimes sessions are free (I believe there is one on 2/23).

This a magnificent example of the respect and love that the former and today's music lovers have for the formal theater.
I have the pleasure of having seen Orchestral performance by the best of Sao Paulo's musicians and outstanding piano players from around the world.along with the renown SP Symphony Orchestra.
It is a outstanding example of the importance that early Portuguese believed important "The Arts".

The teatro municipal always draws crowds who visit Sao Paulo. The old colonial architecture is stunning from the outside while the tour tells a lot about its history, the way the theatro has been one of the major signposts of Brazilian theatre and musical culture. I heard that the first adaptation of Hamlet in Brazil was performed here. The teatro falls at the center of the tourist circuit in Old downtown Sao Paulo...so no question of missing it.

I just took a most interesting tour of the theatre. We finished in the basement and were told that is where the museum used to be before it closed several years ago.
Future plans for the basement are for it to become a bar.
By all means, tour the theatre, just don't expect to find a museum.

The Theatro Municipal is the most famous and tradition place for classic music presentation and ballet. The orchestra is great, there are important Operas going on and some ballet presentations there changed my life.
Besides its great architecture (it was build during the richest period in São Paulo history) and the quality of the performances, it is also far from being the most expensive theatre in São Paulo.
You can find some presentations during the day for a dollar or even free. If you want tickets for famous concerts and etc might get more expensive, but usually is a cheap place to find quality presentations.
It has a cafè inside that is super full during presentations, and they are about to open a restaurant in the basement. If I am not mistaken there are guided tours as well.

The Museum Theatro Municipal of São Paulo is very a impressive building.
We walked around it to enjoy all aspects of its architectural brilliance.
There are a few shady characters around there so do beware.
