The area

Neighborhood:
Sé, which derives its name from Sé Square, is a central neighborhood in historic São Paulo. Close by, the Law School, the Museum of the Court of Justice and the Metropolitan Cathedral offer inspiring architecture. If you are looking for cultural activities, head to Caixa Cultural and check the schedule. In the area there is a popular pedestrian street called “Rua Direita”, one of the first streets in the region, which today marks the crowded perimeter. Sé is a great area to explore during daytime, but use caution if visiting alone at night.

A place that has had its moment of glory but unfortunately has become impoverished. Many homeless tents on the sidewalks are sad. Good restaurants nearby. The famous restaurant Terraco Italia with its panoramic bar ...SP 360 degrees ...At nightfall caution. And in general in the big cities of Brazil ... no apparent jewelry no watch and the mobile in the pocket.

Hasn’t changed much over the years. First came here in 1986. More hopeless people and other beggars. Small groups of thieves are vigilant for opportunities to steal from visitors. Nice greenery and interesting to walk through.

An historic place, first established in 1889, to relax from the hustle and bustle of central São Paulo on a mid-week day. The major negative of the park is that there are many homeless people here, and the otherwise nice scenery is polluted with garbage and sadly, the belongings of the homeless.

If you want to see the dark side of São Paulo, go there. Homeless people and junkies everywhere hanging on the floor. There is not even a bank to sit. If there weren´t a police car nearby, we would probably have been robbed or even hijacked.

On Sundays, the whole of Praca Republica is taken over by a market with stalls selling everything from lace to housewares, t-shirts to food (quite good food..) to art work.

Pickpockets will not be a problem providing you take minimum precautions. There is subway station right there under the praca, or you can get a cab from Jardins for about R20.

Never walk on the square during the night, could be really dangerous. During the weekends you will find a good free fair with crafts and nice asian food and candies. Could be considered one of the hearths of the old Sao Paulo city center.

I drop by this large colourful Sunday craft market every time I visit Sao Paulo. It´s a great place to go on a Sunday as many of the other shops in the city centre are closed. It´s the perfect place to buy souveniers (think jewelry, t-shirts, magnets, brazilian musical instruments, and beautiful paintings of the beach and brazilian life). As the previous person mentioned there is a fantastic food area selling japanese, italian and brazilian food, as well as the most delicious cakes you´ve ever seen!!! The market runs all year but has more stalls and is more vibrant in the summer with bands playing etc. Be careful with your belongings/bags (as with anywhere when travelling) but this market is a safe and friendly place. Stick to the market and the surrounding streets but best to avoid the garden area behind the art section, there were a few dodgy people there last time i visited. This place is definitely one of my favourite places as it´s less posh than the Jardins area and has an authentic feel to it with many locals also paying a visit. Enjoy!!

Just a central square in São Paulo's downtown. Full of small stores and crowded as well. Dangerous at night due to beggers and homeless people, including som gay scorts. On Sundays there's a free fair (antiqué) together with some local arts.

One of the more interesting squares in the centre of Sao Paulo, but now mainly office buildings. The elegant old mansion blocks of Avenida Sao Luis are beautiful. Suggest to visit during the day as the square has it's fair share of users - not so safe at night ;-)

Yes, just go on Sunday, to see the market of paintings, craftsmanship and brazilian stones.

At other days, it is a dangerous places, having beggars and too many shadows. Unfortunately, a quite degradated piece of the city

The State Ministry of Education building is worthy a look. Go there by subway
