Pinacoteca is a museum of visual arts, with emphasis on Brazilian production since the nineteenth century. It belongs to the São Paulo State Secretariat of Culture. It was founded in 1905 by the State Government of São Paulo and it is the oldest art museum in the city. It is installed in the old building of the Arts and Crafts College, designed in the late nineteenth century by the architect Ramos de Azevedo. In the 1990's it underwent an extensive renovation with the architect Paulo Mendes da Rocha's project. Pinacoteca hosts about thirty exhibitions and receives about 450,000 visitors yearly. The museum's main focus is to promote to general public a better experience with visual arts with its collection, building and historical relevance.

If you like art or architectural places, you must go to Pinacoteca. They always have beautiful and interesting expositions and besides that, the place itself is stunning. Close to "estação da luz" and "mercadão" you can visit all 3 places in the same day!

I didn't come here during my first several visits to Sao Paulo and it's too bad. The building is beautifully restored and utilized and is the main reason to come. It's a very modern restoration inside an classy turn-of-the-century shell. The museum is quite large and everyone will find something interesting. The emphasis here is on Brazilian art. You won't... I wanted very much to see the sculptures that looked so real lifelike but not human proportions. Instead was told that had moved away (the little I could understand of the beautiful flow of Portuguese by the locals) 4 months before. The paintings and other sculptures were interesting but nothing that could remove my disappointment. I did like some of... More

Great place to kill some time. Sundays are free (and parking too!) But try to park inside their small parking lot because the streets are full of bums, telling you to pay them to park (of course, don't). The museum is very big- and has modern art on the first floor, with the gorgeous old, classic art and statues on... More
