Very interesting way to find out when your family arrived to the country, in which wessel, which port. You can issuea certificate with the data you find there. Was very helpfull in our research to find our family origins and birth certificate.

Out of the way but worth it

As Americans, we knew the immigrant process our ancestors endured, so it was interesting to learn how Brazil handled the many peoples who came to South America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It explains how these foreigners were assimilated into Brazilian society today, and helps explain why Brazilians don't describe themselves like we do as Italian-Americans, for example. It is located in an out-of-the way part of Sao Paolo -- one of the two taxis we took there got lost -- but it is on the site of the actual immigration center. There are some translations into English but not many. Knowing all the information would have made it a better experience. We attended on Saturday, which as free admission. One unexpected treat was how the barista prepared our coffee. She created designs and even a caricature of one of our group with the milk foam.

Very interesting. Consider taking a cab.

Very interesting. We spent one hour and a half there. We went there by taxi. So, we don´t know exactly where the metro station is, but as we left we saw dozens of homeless people, which can cause concern to people, although it doesn´t mean they are dangerous. I hear there are some services aimed at the homeless people nearby. We called a taxi home.

My husband and I loved the museum! I think it is the kind of museum that all immigrants and tourist should visit in São Paulo to understand the diversity of Brazilian and how the country grew and developed because the influence and labor force of immigrants

São Paulo’s Ellis Island - Wonderful place to visit

This is not only a museum. This is the place where the majority of immigrants from Europe and Japan arrived by train after disembarking from Santos at the end of nineteenth and beginning of twentieth century.
The installations renovated recently show the histories of individual immigrants, their living conditions, their difficulties and the historical context of development of São Paulo.
A wonderful place to discover these human experiences and local history.
Even if it is not very easily accessible by metro, it is worth the visit!

1848, economic crisis in Europe, heavily unemployment, forced England to prohibit the business of slave trade in 1850, to foster migrants from Europe to the New World, as cheap labor. São Paulo created a huge program of immigration, and this migrant hostel was created in 1868. It’s a good museum, modernized with technology. A few items of the past, beautiful grounds. It lacks a program with replicas, and s store: you come and go and no souvenirs; just a few books. The Cantina deserves a pit stop. Historically, you learn a lot about the Brazilian ethnic fabric.

Worth a visit
This museum is located in a quiet part of Sao Paulo. The Google map doesn't seem to have the correct street name. In any case, the direction was correct.

The street leading from the train station to the museum is quite quiet, with a few homeless people sitting/walking around.

I went on a Wednesday and somehow admission was free. Once inside, there is a lot of info on immigrants from Africa, Europe and Japan, how they ended up working in the sugar cane industry in the country side, etc. It's a great place to learn about Brazilian people.

Something a little different in Sao Paulo, English view

This museum is in the area of Brás of São Paulo.

It is a very interesting museum detailing the history of immigration and migration throughout Brazil but specifically São Paulo.

There is numerous boards of information with pictures and relevant information, around half of which are translated into both Spanish and English. There are interactive games and videos which are only in Portuguese.

This museum was free on the Saturday I went, but is apparently usually 10 BRL, so very cheap considering. It is not far from the centre, and a 15 minute walk from the Brás metro station.

It offers a great insight into the fact that immigration was a central factor in the formative years of the state of São Paulo, I highly recommend visiting!

A Museum that tells an important story

This is a impressive museum with a great ambiance and it tells the story of the migrants who came from all over the world (including one from India) their struggles with poverty, adjustment to food, their determination and grit. It is a multimedia and interactive but where technology is used to best effect to record the poignancy of their stories and ultimate triumph of the human spirit and of course the wonderful, vibrant Brazilian culture. The museum has a very special story to tell which is so relevant today.
