Neighborhood: Sé
Sé, which derives its name from Sé Square, is a central neighborhood in historic São Paulo. Close by, the Law School, the Museum of the Court of Justice and the Metropolitan Cathedral offer inspiring architecture. If you are looking for cultural activities, head to Caixa Cultural and check the schedule. In the area there is a popular pedestrian street called “Rua Direita”, one of the first streets in the region, which today marks the crowded perimeter. Sé is a great area to explore during daytime, but use caution if visiting alone at night.

Estação da Luz is a stunning railway station in the historical district of the city. The station was designed by British architect Henry Driver and was built by Walter Macfarlane & Co. Saracen Foundry, it was assembled in Glasgow and then shipped to São Paulo where it was reassembled. The rail services currently running though the station are operated by CPTM metropolitan rail system. Estação da Luz is quite an unusual sight in the centre of São Paulo and is worth a visit whilst in the area.

Fortunately I have come to this station thousands of times. To me the most beautiful place in the capital. The charming season has the cake cherries which are the Portuguese Language Museum, Pinacoteca and Garden of the Light. I honestly don't know what could be more wonderful!!

We took the subway to the Light Station. It is wonderful and is next to the Portuguese Language Museum and in front of the Pinacoteca. A great walk. The negative point is due to the various street residents in the region.

The place is very beautiful, and really remember the old stations.
The problem is that there is nothing else to do here, you just go, see, and leave!
But still, I recommend a visit as it is very different place from what we normally see!

Sao Paulo seems to really be trying to clean things up... while visiting the Estacao da Luz the sidewalks here and around the park across the street were very clean, the station lobby was being refurbished (and is STUNNING), and the station itself was spotless, befitting it's European architecture.
It was charming and I enjoyed that it is a working station. You can stand on the walkways going over the trains and enjoy the bustle and the view.
You will need less than 30 minutes to visit this site... so combine it with your trip to the art museum across the street.
We did not feel unsafe however I do have to note that we visited as a group of 7 (six adult visitors and our guide) and our guide warned to stick together. Our guide shooed off the few people that approached us, including a few homeless people and what our guide reported was a prostitute.

If you're across the street at Pinocateca, by all means cross the street and check this out. Budget 20 minutes, it's worth it. Beautiful building in nice shape. Station reminds me of a classic European train station. I didn't find the place scary, yeah a few homeless and other humble folks, but I didn't feel unsafe. Check it out inside and out

The Luz station is a place full of history. In the top of it, there is a museum.
If you want to live a diferente experience, there are always express trips that go from Luz Station to other cities such as Jundiaí or Paranapiacaba. You must check the schedules and prices in the official site http://www.cptm.sp.gov.br/Expresso-Turistico/jundiai.asp and make the reservations some weeks ahead.
It is a nice one day trip, to go out from São Paulo and visit other cities in a different way (railway indeed haha).
During the last weeks of january and the begginning of february, Jundiaí celebrates the "Festa da Uva" ... and you could go by train!!

This place would be the Grand Central Terminal (NY) for Sao Paulo.
The building is just Beautiful and the area is well served with great museums and squares. From here you can also get the Train "Tourist Express" and go to very interesting places near Sao Paulo city.
Highly recommended!

This is an icon of São Paulo history. Beautiful architecture, well preserved. A Metro line is integrated with the railway station, so it is easy to get there. The Portuguese Language Museum is next door, and across the street you'll find another museum (Pinacoteca) and a park. Worth a visit.
