It is a really good beach with a lot of service for the hungry, needy, or who wants to have a pause to do some shopping. It can be strong current but there are guards in towers. Remember the sun protection because the sun is much stronger than you think. At minimum factor 30. The problem can be to find a spot to park, and a spot so sit. It IS a very popular place. If you have energy to walk maybe 500 meters, you will find places on a little distance from the beach.

We stayed in Itapema with family but this is definitely a popular place to be during high season (December - February). Make sure you go to the beach early in the morning and go home before the sun gets too high or you are for sure going to burn and make the rest of your trip unbearable! There is a 3 mile paved walking/running and biking path along the beach that is great for morning exercise. Get a fresh coconut from one of the vendors passing by or bars by the beach, get under an umbrella, and relax.

A part of Itapema is Meia Praia. This is now expanding extremely fast, and there are construction work everywhere. It will more or less all be new apartments. A fantastic place, with full tourist service, a busy beach with a lot of activities, and close to the eating. The only problem is to find a place to park, or to at all get down to the area next to the water. Expect the possibility of a small walk (but that goes for most popular beaches in the area). The sun is HOT! Use protection!

In the Summer it is very crowded, but still enjoyable. The waves are usually very tame and you can get everybody to enjoy staying there for hours. (Problem usually are those citizens with way too loud speakers for their private kind of sound.)

Meia-Praia/Itapema serves well as base city to explore the beaches in the region (5 - 30 min away by car), which are among the best in the south east region of Brazil. This beach is not stunning like most beaches in the region, however, it offers good infrastructure of restaurants, pubs, banks, shopping, hospital, pharmacy, etc.. This beach is very enjoyable during the off season months of March, April and November when it's not crowded and the temperature is just perfect... The city has done a great job building a walk path and bike lane along the sea wall, which is about 4 miles/6km long, and has fresh water showers in every beach entry/exit point... The natural vegetation is also being restored along the sea wall and new trees planted for shade... Overall, a good small town.
