great place to shop... there are about three parallel streets closed to vehicles, all full of little shops with reasonable priced clothes, jewellery, and all sorts. Rua Felipe Schmidt is slightly more upscale, and then the streets closer to the market have stores of cheaper goods. We found good Brazilian clothes at great prices, and a good selection of other things. About half way down the street inside a gallery (Centro comercial AP) there is a store just for flip flops which sells more variety than i've ever seen of Haviaianas. in this gallery there is also a small food court, we got really yummy barbecued meat and salads there.

For those who like architecture, I recommend visiting the old center as it has many wonderful buildings, some very well preserved. It also has many old churches.

The center of Floripa is wonderful, it breathes the best of the island's culture and has many gastronomic attractions. The negative opinions here say more about those who give the opinion than about the historic center. If you are visiting here, be sure to go.

I do not recommed visit the historic city center, the place is dirt and ugly with strange people walking around it.
