This is the statue in honour of the first colonisers of the Continent of the Rio Grande, as it was baptised by the Portuguese, the rude men that come to catch the wild cattle that was the real inhabitants of Southern Brazil, also called Campos da Vacaria (Cattle Fields). With his leather rope curled in wide and lose circles (laço), the Laçador caught his prey. He represents the Gaucho, the rough guys who did the tough job for the rich landowners and were always ready to be recruited for the many wars which plagued that frontier for at least 300 years.

Either your in or our of town, a stop here is a MUST! This iconic figure of Porto Alegre has its roots with Argentina and the interior 'Gauchos'. There is no parking at the statue, but you can park close by and be careful with the traffic with you want to be at the same spot. otherwise, take a photo from off the street.

It's just a medium-sized statue, positioned in a place with a lot of traffic - there's not much to see or do about the statue. There is no museum or food structure, or anything linked. When you arrive in the city from the airport area, you will pass in front of the statue and that is more than enough.

A beautiful monument, to the legacy of Gauchos. But indeed its just a monument. Its nice to visit during the day because its a place that tends to get dangerous at night.

It is a must-go for anyone visiting Porto Alegre just because it is a symbol of the city, but don't spend too much time here. It is just a statue after all, but quite pretty for one :) An icon of Gaúcho culture!

Jast a statue close to the airport. Not very big and not impressive. I wouldn't recommend to stop there.

Don't loose your time to go there, just stop by. It's a symbol of Porto Alegre but it is in a tiny place in the middle of a road. domee friends went there and became disapointed.

If you are coming to Porto Alegre this statue is a must. It is very close to the airport so it should not be difficult to go there either on the arrival or when living.

It is a 10 minutes stop that will allow you to take a picture of the main Porto Alegre symbol. There is no better icon for this city than this statue.
