This is only a par 68 but make no mistake, you need to shape your shots to survive! The course is beautiful with maybe hole 10, 12, 14 as exception (they lie on other side of the road). The stretch from 1-9 and 15-18 is amazing, with the biggest hight elevations and nicest backdrops you can get. On hole 9 the friendly people from the adjacent favela can see you struggle. This is a must play for 330R$, incl. decent bag with set of clubs you can assemble yourself. Take a caddie (150R$) for your first time around..

This is a beautiful course. Up, down, with amazing views. The caddies are great too.. Only thing is they have this colonial arrogance still, and seem to only want rich people to play. Plus they only accept cash! And the nearest ATM is miles away, so come prepared. The golf though - spectacular. Brilliant.

As many things in Rio, the value for money has decreased radically due to all the hype created by the world cup and Olympic games. Well the Gold Club of Gavea is just another example of very poor value for Money. At R$400,000 (USD200,000) to become a member I can guarantee there are thousands of golf clubs around the world that are not only a lot cheaper but also more beautiful.

I am told that it costs $200k to join Galea club - it can't be for the golf !
The course is very pretty , with some great views, but amazingly neglected and unkempt - none of the tees were actually prepared, and the surrounds and paths were poorly maintained.
As day visitors, we were given 20 year old rental clubs, no buggies available, although we saw several in the course, caddies that simply carried the bags, and amazingly a pro shop with only medium shirts , no socks and no hats !! Yes - all they had was size medium Galea golf shirts.
The bar / restaurant was fine and friendly with simple dishes.
Overall a bit of a mystery why it is rated so highly as a top golf club .

I'm not sure how accessible this is to the general public. However, if you get a chance to visit, don't miss it. It's an oasis of calm and beauty. Sure would like to play here.

This was a very enjoyable day and if you are a golfer visiting Rio de Janeiro, I would highly recommend planning a game of golf at the Gavea Golf and Country Club. The course is about 25 minutes south of Copacabana Beach (probably only 12 kms, but the traffic is heavy). The course itself is really fun to play, quite tight and in good condition. It is not overly long (5,600 yards off the Blue tees) and a par of 68, but interesting. 13 of the holes are at the base of the Flatrock mountain and 5 holes are the other side of the road, along the beach. The first 9 holes are arduous and you really work hard climbing from one level to the next. It was 35 degrees celsius the day we played and we were drenched in perspiration. I can't comment on the greens, because 3 were temporary and the other 15 were cored and sanded. But the condition of the course overall was excellent. Nice colonial clubhouse. A very small pro shop and the items for sale seemed really expensive. I tried to buy a glove, but they wanted 117 Real for it, that is about US$42. So I didn't buy it and I suggest that you come armed by all the golf equipment you need. We were travelling from Australia, so did not have our clubs with us. I don't think the Club really encourages guests, so the rental clubs were antiques. It was no big deal, but they were really sub standard rental clubs by any measure. The club does seem to have some golf carts, but they were no on offer to us. So we had a caddie each and walked. They were terrific and my caddie spoke fluent English. A small tip of 50 real is expected for the caddie. We arranged the golf through our tour company and I think that is a must. It just made it easy to communicate with the club what you wanted, who made the booking, organising clubs etc. Trying to do that between English and Portuguese would make it hard for you to get past the security gate. Overall, a great golf experience and amazing views, so even if the golf is not going well, just take your camera.

We enjoyed the course, quite demanding!
The first nine is set in the foothills of a mountain with some very scenic holes. The back nine is on flatter terrain overlooking the ocean!
It is a private club, we were able to play as our friends had reciprocal rights!
The negatives were disappointing pro shop and English was not spoken!
But a great days golf and a nice lunch by the pool afterwards!

Was fortunate to play Gavea two days while visiting Brazil. Let me just sum it up in one word - wow! I've golfed many places around the world. Gavea is now at the top of my list. Views are simply amazing. Short course but the undulating terrain, tree-lined fairways and strategic placement of boxes quickly reminds you the importance of club selection and ball placement.
Holes 1-9 are played mountain side with some elevated beach views. Cross over to play 10-14 beach side where the new challenge is water in the middle, sand bunkers galore and massive waste bunkers throughout. To finish up the round you cross back to spectacular mountain and jungle views.
I was required to have a caddie at 100R. Alberto was a tremendous help and a wonderful gentleman. Though we did not speak each others language, he quickly learned my way of play and was vital in club selection and reading the greens. Requested him even the second day. If you are walking make sure you are in shape as its a very hilly course.
There is a driving range, putting green, chipping green, clubhouse and locker rooms. Security throughout the course. Handicap limit of 28 for women and 24 for men. I was required to pay cash for the club rental and caddie. Credit card was accepted for the greens fee.

How did you go about setting up a tee time? I plan on traveling in early February and wouldn't mind getting in a round here or at Itanhanga.
